Awards season has come again.
This Sunday, January 5, the 77th Golden Globe Awards will be honoring the best in film and television by handing out its latest batch of accolades. These awards will be given to media aired during the 2019 season, and while there are multiple movies getting a shout-out, some are receiving more attention than others.
We're here to look at which films scored three or more Golden Globe nominations. Though these movies stretch across multiple genres and feature various themes, they all have that "it" factor that has critics raving.
It's time to give last year's films the applause they deserve. Here are the nine most nominated films to be honored at the upcoming Golden Globe ceremony.
9 1917 (3)
This World War I film tells of a pair of British soldiers who must sneak their way to a battalion in order to deliver a secret message that will save countless lives. The movie's intense story and hard-hitting emotional tone left critics impressed, earning the film mentions on many end-of-year top-ten lists as well as a few Golden Globe nominations.
1917 is up for Best Picture — Drama, Best Director (Sam Mendes), and Best Original Score.
8 Knives Out (3)
This mystery-comedy has what is supposed to be a normal family gathering becoming an out-of-control murder framing.
After Harlan Thrombey, a famous novelist passes following his 85th birthday, it's up to Detective Benoit Blanc to figure out who is behind the killing. While Harlan's nurse Marta tries to cover up a dark secret, the rest of the Thrombeys carry out their layered agendas.
Knives Out's complex, twisty plot had audiences raving. While the movie itself received a Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy nomination, actors Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas also received nominations for their performances in the film.
7 Rocketman (3)
Elton John's life story was brought to the big screen via this musical biopic. Though it begins with a young Reginald Dwight becoming interested in music in 1950s Britain despite being ignored by his parents, it ends with him building a successful career.
Starring actor Taron Egerton received a Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy nomination. Rocketman also received nominations in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Original Song categories.
6 Parasite (3)
Though Parasite isn't an American film, the black comedy thriller has managed to sweep up several nominations.
The South Korean feature tells of a low-income family that attempts to defy their social class by posing as well-trained individuals and attempting to secure jobs under the wealthy Park family. The movie's timely social commentary and gripping moments kept viewers entranced.
The film has received nominations in the Best Screenplay and Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language categories. Additionally, Bong Joon-ho has been nominated for Best Director.
5 Joker (4)
The stand-alone Joker film has been gaining lots of attention since its release.
Set in the early '80s, this psychological thriller about Batman's biggest nemesis tells of a failing stand-up comedian who slowly spins into insanity as his attempts at a better life fail against the backdrop of a society tearing itself apart.
The film's realness and top-notch performances intrigued critics. Director Todd Phillips was nominated for Best Director and Joaquin Phoenix was nominated for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. The film also scored Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Original Score nominations.
4 The Two Popes (4)
Based on the 2017 play of the same name, The Two Popes has Pope Benedict and Pope Francis attempting to forge the future of the Catholic Church.
This Netflix biographical drama surprised viewers with its incredible performances and immersive plot. It is a contender for four Golden Globe Awards including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Anthony Hopkins), and Best Actor (Jonathan Pryce).
3 Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (5)
This Quentin Tarantino comedy-drama is going a step further by bringing in a total of five Golden Globe nominations.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, set in 1969 L.A., tells of actor Rick Dalton and his best friend/stunt double who attempt to wade through the changing movie industry. Though Dalton's TV glory days have passed, he thinks he can make a connection that will put him back on track after actress Sharon Tate moves in next door.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt received Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture nominations, respectively. Tarantino scored Best Screenplay and Best Director nominations for his work on the film, while the movie itself is nominated for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy.
2 The Irishman (5)
Based on the 2004 book by Charles Brandt, I Heard You Paint Houses, The Irishman tells of a truck driver who transforms himself into a hitman and ends up working for real-life mobster Russell Bufalino and Teamster President Jimmy Hoffa.
The film managed to balance the funny and the serious, leading to strong reviews from critics everywhere. This had it topping many end-of-year top ten lists and receiving several Golden Globe nominations. While both Al Pacino and Joe Pesci received Best Supporting Actor noms, Martin Scorsese earned one for Best Director, and Steven Zaillian scored a nomination for Best Screenplay. The Irishman is additionally competing in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category.
1 Marriage Story (6)
Topping off the list as the most nominated film at the year's Golden Globes ceremony is Marriage Story.
This comedy-drama takes a genuine look at the difficulties of divorce, as a successful New York City theater director and Los Angeles-born actor seek to split. The distance, as well as their son's well-being, adds complication to the ending relationship.
Marriage Story was universally praised, scoring nominations in the Best Screenplay for director-writer Noah Baumbach, Best Original Score, and Best Motion Picture – Drama categories. Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, and Laura Dern all earned acting nominations in their designated categories. Critics couldn't help but applaud how much weight the cast brought to each of their characters.
