Spinning Out Season 2: Release Date & Story Details | Screen Rant

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Spinning Out season 1.

Spinning Out season 1 charts Kat Baker's (Kaya Scodelario) journey from believing she'll never skate competitively again to competing at sectionals - but will we get to see that journey continue in season 2? Created by Samantha Stratton, the sports drama debuted on Netflix on New Years Day, 2020.

Also starring January Jones as Kat's mother, Carol, Spinning Out explores not only with the intense pressures of competition skating, but also the struggles of bipolar disorder - which both Kat and Carol have. Season 1 of the series also dealt with other heavy themes, including racial profiling, post-traumatic stress disorder (which Kat developed after a brutal fall on the ice), and sexually predatory behavior.

At the end of Spinning Out's first season, Kat discovers that her 16 year-old sister Serena's (Willow Shields) doctor has been sexually abusing her, leading to Carol handing out a taste of her own justice in the form of a baseball bat. Kat arrives just in time to compete with Justin in the pairs skating competition at sectionals - but the credits roll just as their program begins. Will we ever find out if they moved on to nationals?

Netflix hasn't officially announced season 2 of Spinning Out, but that's not cause for concern just yet. The streaming service typically waits several weeks after the release of a new season before making a renewal decision, to see if the viewing figures are strong enough to support it. Expect to hear news about Spinning Out season 2 by the end of February 2020.

If Spinning Out is renewed for a second season, it will likely release in early-to-mid 2021. The show received a series order in October 2018, perhaps in an effort to capitalize on the fervor surrounding Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir's gold-winning performance at the 2018 Winter Olympics (Kat wears a version of Virtue's dress in the show). Filming took place between January and May, 2019, with Spinning Out season 1 releasing about a year after principal photography began. We can expect a similar production timeline for the second season.

When Kat first begins skating with Justin in Spinning Out season 1, their coach Dasha (Svetlana Efremova) believes they won't be ready for the Olympics track until the following year. Indeed, it seems as though they've fallen at the first hurdle when they place seventh with their short program at regionals. However, Kat decides to stop taking her lithium in order to have more energy and boost her confidence. She and Justin add difficult jumps to their long program to get a bigger score, which works - but without her bipolar medication, Kat quickly spirals into a manic episode.

Despite all the hurdles in their path, Kat and Justin do go on to compete at sectionals and they appear to be in a trusting and comfortable place when their routine begins. It's unlikely that season 2 will begin with them having failed to secure a place at nationals, so we can expect to see them continuing up the competition ladder in season 2. We can also expect Justin and Kat's rivals, Leah (Kaitlyn Leeb) and Gabe (Johnny Weir), to be right there alongside them as they do, vying to represent the United States at the Olympics. Will Kat be able to cope with the demands of the competition, or will she risk going off her medication again?

There's also the matter of the fallout following Carol hitting Dr. Parker (Charlie Hewson) with a baseball bat. Immediately afterwards she called the police to report an assault, but it was unclear whether she was reporting Parker's assault of her daughter, or her own assault of him. Either way, it will be interesting to see how Serena recovers from her disastrous fall at sectionals.
