Star Wars: Project Luminous Is The Franchise's Future: What Is It?

Project Luminous is how Star Wars will live on beyond the Skywalker saga. Now that the nine-film Star Wars main series has reached its conclusion, there are more question marks than ever before surrounding the future of the franchise. While many films and TV series have already been announced, as well as various comic lines and book series in the pipeline, there is still some ambiguity as to what these projects may entail.

One of the most intriguing of them all was the announcement of Project Luminous, which carries the tagline, "The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field, created by all living things…", a line famously said by Ben Kenobi in George Lucas' original Star Wars movie. The project has been kept mostly under wraps, with only a few details having been shared since its announcement at Star Wars Celebration Chicago in 2019.

Project Luminous will be a multimedia initiative - based in books and comics - that will tell a cohesive story. So far there have been five individuals announced to write the stories - Justina Ireland, Daniel José Older, Claudia Gray, Cavan Scott, and Charles Soule - whose work will be released by a number of publishers from Marvel Comics to Disney-Lucasfilm Press. The team will also work alongside the Lucasfilm story group to craft the world in accordance with the current Star Wars canon. Project Luminous will be used to set up the future of Star Wars on-screen.

Set to begin in 2020, Project Luminous is fairly reminiscent of a similar Star Wars event created back in the mid-1990s. Shadows of the Empire told the story of what Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and others were doing between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It introduced new characters and locations in the universe across the mediums of a novel by Steve Perry, video game for the Nintendo 64, and a comic series. Though it is no longer considered a part of Star Wars canon, the project was mildly successful even without the support of a feature film. It expanded the lore beyond the big screen, something Project Luminous seeks to do as well.

This is a fresh start for Disney, as the Star Wars sequel trilogy has seen its conclusion and the remaining series they have in the pipeline are based upon preexisting characters from the Skywalker saga. This project, along with the upcoming Star Wars films, will be Disney's chance at a fresh start. Therefore, the storytelling potential here is virtually unlimited, and with a capable group of people adding their creative input, the project could tell a unique story unlike anything Star Wars media has put out before. With no Star Wars movie in 2020, the year will be a new beginning for the franchise with Project Luminous, and it may be a sign of things to come beyond the big screen.
