Matrix 4 Set Video May Show Trinity's New Powers | Screen Rant

A new video from the set of The Matrix 4, reveals the story might involve Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) teaching Neo (Keanu Reeves) how to fly, as the footage appears to show the actors (or their stunt doubles) leaping off a building and then soaring into the sky. The unexpected sequel brings back original actors Moss, Reeves, and Jada Pinkett, who will join newcomers Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Gross, Jessica Henwick, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. One of the original trilogy's helmers, Lana Wachowski, returns to direct the sequel. She'll also co-write the film alongside novelists Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell (the author of Cloud Atlas, a novel the Wachowskis adapted into a 2012 feature film starring Tom Hanks).

Not a ton is known about the plot of The Matrix 4, but a prior set video leak hinted Reeves won't always appear in Neo's signature leather coat and sunglasses. This led some fans to speculate that the film's story will focus on a newly reborn Neo learning how to navigate the Matrix all over again. However, Laurence Fishburne isn't returning, which means Morpheus might not be around to show Neo the ropes. The new footage appears to further confirm part of that theory.

The set video was posted to a YouTube account named "Is It Worth It?" The poster writes that Reeves and Moss, or their stunt doubles (probably the latter), jumped off a San Francisco rooftop to practice a stunt for The Matrix 4. According to the post, the film's crew "is testing sandbags" and, presumably, the safety of the stunt. The video shows what looks like Trinity and Neo leaping off a building, falling for a moment before they stop mid-air and hover. Then, Trinity takes Neo's hand, and they fly straight up into the sky.

The footage above seems to mirror a scene in the first movie where Morpheus teaches a newly awakened Neo how to control the Matrix, allowing him to perform superhuman acts. In the original film, Morpheus takes Neo to a rooftop and shows him how to leap across an impossible gap between buildings, only by believing that it's possible. This eventually leads to Neo realizing the laws of gravity, in the Matrix, are only as strong as his own mind makes them. By the end of the movie, Neo takes off from the ground and flies into the air like Superman.

Everything could be drastically different in The Matrix 4 - which Reeves said has a "very ambitious" script - if the set footage truly reveals Trinity teaching Neo how to fly. It could mean that Trinity takes over for Morpheus in the role of Neo's teacher. Then again, perhaps she's merely saving him from falling after realizing he hasn't yet "awakened" his true powers. The Warner Bros-produced sequel hits theaters on May 21, 2021, so fans still have quite a long time before any definitive answers are revealed.
