10 Best Sci-Fi Shows Returning This Year | ScreenRant

The year 2020 hasn't started in the best way possible. Many countries are going through a health crisis these days and they're struggling to get the situation under control. People are in quarantine, isolated from their friends and acquaintances. That said, there are still a lot of things to look forward to.

The quarantine means people also have more time to catch up on their hobbies, whether that means reading, playing video games, or watching movies and TV shows. Plus, there are a lot of upcoming TV sci-fi shows which will return this year with a new season, a fact which will no doubt be good news to any sci-fi fan out there.

10 Future Man

Future Man is a perfect show for all the geeks out there who dreamt about escaping their lives and going on an adventure of a lifetime. Well, something exactly like that happened to Josh Futterman (Josh Hutcherson).

Josh isn't very happy with his routine existence but when visitors from the future suddenly arrive at his doorstep and tell him he's the key to saving humanity, Josh very soon realizes that he's in well over his head, since fighting in real life and fighting in video games are two very different things. Future Man is full of humor and action and its third and final season will arrive on the 3rd of April.

9 Star Trek: Discovery

Whatever your opinion on Star Trek: Discovery may be, there's no denying that the show is one of most talked about sci-fi shows of the last few years. It also managed to revive the Star Trek franchise to a certain degree and later led to the release of this year's Star Trek: Picard, which is created by the same TV station, CBS All Access.

As the title hints, this TV show focuses on starship Discovery and its crew. It takes place ten years before Kirk and Spock went into space, and fills in missing knowledge about the history of Starfleet. The third season should come out this year, but it's not yet clear when exactly it will happen.

8 Supergirl

If you like your regular fill of superhero TV shows as much as the next guy, then you shouldn't miss this one. Yes, Supergirl is still currently running on TV, just like a few other TV shows which belong to the Arrowverse, such as The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, to name just two.

Supergirl is currently in its fifth season and it's not losing its breath in the slightest (courtesy of her mighty Kryptonian lungs, no doubt). However, even though the fifth season is on TV right now, it's already been stated that the sixth season should also premiere this year, probably in autumn or early winter,

7 Titans

Supergirl isn't the only superhero TV show which will premiere a new season this year. So will Titans, a relatively recent show which has only released two seasons so far. If you haven't watched it before, it's the best time to catch up on the previous episodes.

As the name hints, the show focuses on the superhero group (Teen) Titans, a powerful team of young people who have been an important part of DC comics for quite some time. In the last season, Dick Grayson finally suited up as Nightwing, so it's safe to assume that big things are coming.

6 Red Dwarf

Let's leave superhero shows behind for a while and focus on an absolute classic. The British sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf released its first episode in 1988, amazing thirty two years ago, and it's still running, with the same crew that appeared in the first season.

In case you don't know this sci-fi gem, it's about a bunch of misfits and losers who survive on their ship Red Dwarf (hence the title) after three million years have passed and they're the last surviving humans (and other creatures) alive (or so they think). The show is an endless reservoir of great quotes and its thirteenth season will premiere on the 12th of April.

5 Doom Patrol

And the superheroes are back! Well, sort of anyway, since this group certainly isn't your average, everyday, run-of-the-mill superhero team. What else would you expect from a group called the Doom Patrol, after all?

The show is even younger than Titans, and it will only enter its second season this year. The quirky team has first appeared on the above mentioned Titans, and they managed to shine so much even in a single episode that it immediately became clear that they deserve their own spin-off series. These superheroes all have tragic pasts, but that doesn't make them any less special.

4 The Twilight Zone

Don't be fooled by the name - this TV show isn't a sequel of the vampire franchise Twilight. Instead, it's based on a successful TV show which premiered all the way back in 1959. So if you're in the mood for some retro, this show is the right pick for you.

It's an anthology, which means that every episode focuses on a different story. That can certainly be a plus - if one episode doesn't catch your attention, you can just move to the next one. The Twilight Zone cleverly combines sci-fi, horror, and mystery, and it shows that the world people live in is much more complicated than it might seem.

3 The Boys

Maybe you like superheroes but are a bit tired of all the superhero shows coming onto TV or currently running and would like to see something new and fresh? Well, then The Boys shouldn't disappoint. Yes, it's based on comic books, and yes, it's about superheroes. However, this show's superheroes may be super, but they're far from heroic. In fact, most of them are the biggest bad guys around, and the titular boys decide to end the superheroes once and for all.

But how do you fight someone who has superpowers? The show is brutal, hilarious, filled with tension and great characters, and its second season should come back presumably in the middle of this year.

2 Westworld

Some viewers may think that the super successful TV show Westworld is a new concept but it's actually based on a novel of the same name written by Michael Crichton. The novel has already been adapted all the way back in 1973, but the TV show chooses a much different approach than the film - darker, deeper, and realistic. It doesn't hurt that it's filled with many complex characters. A lot of them might not be human but that doesn't mean watching them is any less fascinating.

The show released the first episode of its third season of the 15th of March and in total, the third season should have eight episodes.

1 The Mandalorian

Star Trek has already gotten its moment of a spotlight in this article, so now it's time to shed some light at Star Wars as well. The Mandalorian premiered last year, and it was one of the most anticipated TV shows of 2019.

It managed to enrich the already complicated world of Star Wars, introduced new aliens, characters, planets, and other things, but it still remained faithful to the series' spirits... and fans noticed it, and appreciated it. Some heroes were more popular than others (such as baby Yoda), but overall, the show was a success and its second season, which should premiere in October, will hopefully follow in the first season's footsteps.
