The show has survived two seasons so far, and is receiving tons of love from cyberpunk fans. The lead protagonist is Takeshi Kovacs, but, the most loved character is undoubtedly his loyal and efficient friend Poe. Today, we are going to share with you ten facts about him that the show left out.

10 Personal History

It is really amusing that the original AI hotel as mentioned in the books, was an AI hotel with the legendary singer Jimi Hendrix theme. The hotel was established in 2087.

When Poe slaughtered each one of Kovacs’ attackers with his auto turret guns, Ortega told Kovacs that she didn’t need a warrant to charge Poe for the murders. Apparently, Poe (or Hendrix) had been charged and prosecuted for organic damage before too(mentioned in the books). He was not convicted though, the court had rejected the case saying that it was a demonstrable case of self-defense.

9 Hotel Infrastructure

Kovacs had three requirements when he was looking for a hotel or B&B to stay for the time – light, space and room service. The Hendrix or The Raven, both had more than enough space.

The hotel had a huge lobby, but, the rooms were very gloomy. Street lights were the biggest source of light for the entrance and the reception. The walls and ceiling were fitted with old illuminium tiles and the interiors were done in old fashioned Victorian style.

8 Why People Avoid AI Hotels

When Kovacs decided to look for a stay after being hired by Bancroft, he explained in the voice-over that AI hotels had turned old fashioned by then and that no one wanted to stay at those. Poe also told in a scene that Kovacs was the first guest to arrive at the Hotel Raven in fifty years.

Why were the AI hotels avoided? Why had they gone out of fashion? The show doesn’t really explain it. The thing is, in this universe, people don’t trust AIs anymore with valid reasons of course. They are much too clingy and creepy. They are hardwired to want guests the way humans want sex. They seem to stalk their guests and always keep an eye on their moves, which means their moves are essentially recorded somewhere in their database. Many of the AIs also think that they are above humans and dislike them.

7 General Trivia

Hendrix was stalker-esque, but, he did it more subtly. He used to change his appearance and his voice at will, depending on the person he was talking to. He thought he would look more likable if he looked and sounded like someone whom the human really liked.

He used to greet his guests like that too. Kovacs, when first entered the hotel, met with a command console. As soon as he spoke some Japanese request into that, the AI converted to an Asian man, but, just a moment later, the face rapidly morphed into a full-blown blonde Caucasian female in a business suit. The showrunner and the writers attributed the same traits to Poe too.

6 Home

Poe as fans know, is an Artificial Intelligence bot. He is the owner of the Hotel Raven. He is actually the hotel himself. In the first season, when Poe agrees to perform psychosurgery on Lizzie, her father Vernon Elliot gets furious.

He drops a glass breaking it and asks him if he can feel the pain. Poe tells him that he isn’t feeling any pain, but, anger. This goes on to show that he really cares about his hotel. In the second season, he calls the same hotel as the Nevermore.

5 What Kind Of Debts

It is no secret that Poe loves humans. He loves to speak, act and even dress like one. In the second season, Poe was very troubled with his continuous glitches and having to reboot and start all over again, so he gulped a couple of drinks. He offered Miss Dig one too.

One of his numerous human fancies is gambling. He loves playing games with his other AI friends and a few of them taunt him several times about his ways and debts. Apparently, he has outstanding unpaid AI Union dues.

4 Poe From The Books

After the war, most of the hotels and companies went under because of a shortage of cash, and no one felt the need to decommission these hotels or remove the military graded weapons. Poe from the books, The Hendrix took advantage of the opportunity.

It upgraded itself to artificial intelligence status and bought itself out. The Hendrix also didn't necessarily look like a human male all the time, it used to keep changing it’s appearance quite often.

3 Season 2 Ending Explained With Respect To Poe

A broken and shattered Poe made a harsh decision to reboot himself and start afresh. In the last scenes, he returns anew and discovers with Miss Dig that his database has a secret encrypted DHF file stored inside. It could be the original Kovacs, or Poe(his old memories and data) himself too.

2 History of AIs

When Takeshi Kovacs was digitally imprisoned on ice, a long corporate war ensued. To ensure more security, the AI hotels were equipped with military-grade weapons, so that they could protect their guests.

When the war was over, the need for those high-end weapons was futile, but, the government did not remove or decommission these hotels. Neither did they extract the dangerous weapons. So, the AI hotels like The Raven continued to run as usual, except people stopped checking in!

1 Death

In the year 2384, Poe died after the Ghostwalker hit him with a destabilizer and disabled him permanently. In the finale of the first season, Reileen instructed the Ghoinstruct to turn the “AI” into nanodust. Mister Leung, following her orders, shot him with an electron destabilizer.

Poe's (which means the entire hotel's system) got corrupted and he died(digitally). But, much to the relief of the fans, he got restored and came back in the second season as his most usual self(except he kept experiencing abrupt glitches and memory lapse).
