Fans Preferred These 10 Film Adaptations To The Original Books

Not too long ago, a survey was conducted by SuperSummary that sought to reach a consensus over fans’ perceptions of films adapted into movies. Out of this survey, it was found that a number of film franchises were preferred over the source material, regardless of critical opinion from sites like Rotten Tomatoes. To be fair, the first few entries in this list tilt toward the books rather than the films.

However, since the percentage of people that chose the movies was pretty significant, we’ve compiled 10 movies and franchises that have been able to stand on their own from this survey. A majority of these, in fact, far outrank the books in popularity, so read on further and see if you feel the same way.

10 Charlotte's Web

A story about the relationship between Charlotte the spider and Wilbur the pig, this movie is about the power of friendship despite the characters being two very different species. Featuring a star cast with the likes of Julia Roberts and Dakota Fanning, Charlotte’s Web fared pretty big at the box office.

While a good amount of viewers did favor the book over the film, the significant chunk that liked the screen adaptation better did for good reason as the chemistry between the cast is worthy of mention.

9 Harry Potter Series

Everyone’s aware of the boy wizard whose popularity dominated the end of the previous century and most of the current one. Harry Potter was always going to have a larger fanbase for the books, yet a surprising amount of people chose the films over it.

That was most likely because the current generation either weren’t born or just weren’t old enough to remember the hype when a new Harry Potter book would be released. It's also one of the Harry Potter mediums that has remained safe from the number of changes J.K. Rowling has retroactively made .

8 The Twilight Saga

Had the survey been taken a few years prior, then we have no doubt that The Twilight Saga would have topped the list. During the days when the movies were coming out, their popularity was so great that people tended to forget the books came first.

And while the movies have aged rather well, the ratio of fans preferring the book has skewed slightly higher. However, there’s not much to separate the books and film fanbase, meaning you’re likely to find a lot of people who preferred the screen adaptation.

7 The Hunger Games Series

Had it not been for the lackluster Mockingjay films, then we can be certain that more people would have voted for the screen adaptations over the books. Even now, the contest is neck-and-neck between the two, and we understand why.

After all, this series that brought female empowerment to the forefront, as Katniss Everdeen’s role in a political uprising, where she fights and leads, made her an extremely strong character. Not to mention the star power of actors like Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth.

6 The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy

Here’s where the preference of fans starts to go unarguably toward the film versions, as The Lord of the Rings’ onscreen success has seen its popularity remain exactly the same for fans even two decades later.

It’s also due to the fact that the books have a very meandering pace to them, which makes reading them a bit of a chore, especially for the current generation. The sheer quality of the movies, though, ensures that viewers frequently take a trip to Middle Earth to watch Frodo’s journey to destroy the One Ring.

5 The Shining

Films based on Stephen King’s works have become so famous, that they've had the effect of the novels losing popularity. Case in point is The Shining, which continues to taste success after four decades. This should be credited to director Stanley Kubrick, whose work was such that you don’t need to read the book to feel its chilling effects.

The many changes by the director — most for the better — has led to the screen adaptation’s greater success.

4 The Notebook

Movies based on Nicholas Sparks books have fizzled completely out of favor in the last few years, but they were at their peak when The Notebook was released. This film became so iconic in romantic pop culture that it turned the lead actors into instant superstars.

Plus, the film is easily the best screen adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks book, lacking some of the cheesier elements that later movies would have. Mostly, though, it’s the chemistry between the actors that has seen the film stay much ahead of the book.

3 Charlie And The Chocolate Factory

In what is another example of a book being too old to remain as relevant as before, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s film version trumps the source material for being close to contemporary days in its release.

With the likes of Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore remaining well-known among audiences, the film has become a classic. It also helps that the special effects still hold up, which has led to kids watching the movie for the first time, and becoming instant fans.

2 Jurassic Park Series

As many as 68% of the people surveyed voted in favor of the film version of Jurassic Park, with another sizable amount preferring both versions. It’s hard to argue against movie fans as Jurassic Park is a cinematic wonder that will never go out of style.

There are drastic differences between the book and the film too, and the latter is better in all aspects, from character development to awe-inspiring scenes. With Jurassic World spawning out of this series, the books really don’t have a chance of catching up in popularity.

1 Forrest Gump

If you were to ask a group of people if they enjoyed Forrest Gump’s book version, almost everyone would express surprise at the existence of the novel. The movie has been so enormously successful that a whopping 79% voted for the adaptation, and only 5% opting for the book.

Tom Hanks has become synonymous with Forrest, and his masterful performance exceeded the characterization found within the pages of the book. At least in the case of Forrest Gump, we can say without a shadow of a doubt that the movie is the superior version of the story.
