Does The Hunt Use Saw’s Theme Music In The Final Fight?

Audiences who watched the new Blumhouse horror film, The Huntmay have noticed some familiar musical notes during the finale that are reminiscent of the theme from Saw. Modern horror films have a knack for throwing in easter eggs that reference other popular works of horror, and are often connected by the fact that they may share crew or cast members. So, what are the connections between The Hunt and Saw?

At first glance, the connections between The Hunt and Saw are very thin. The men behind The Hunt, director Craig Zobel and writers Damon Lindelof and Nick Cuse, have backgrounds in thrillers and sci-fi, but never worked on any of the Saw films. Producer Jason Blum, while not a producer on any of the Saw films, is noted for his collaboration with Saw writers James Wan and Leigh Whannell on the Insidious franchise. The two films share no major cast members. It leaves one to wonder if there is any connection that could lead to Saw’s theme being used as an easter egg during the finale of The Hunt.

The composer for The Hunt, Nathan Barr, has a long history scoring horror films, including numerous collaborations with director Eli Roth. However, he has not scored an entry in the Saw franchise. Was composer Barr directly referring to the Saw theme in the finale of The Hunt, or is it just conjecture?

While it would certainly leave fans buzzing as to the reason behind the connection, The Hunt does not actually use Saw’s theme music during the final fight scene. While the beat is similar, it seems this is nothing more than a coincidence. Not even so much as an easter egg. For all those hoping for some kind of The Hunt/Saw crossover, that seems to be wishful thinking. However, fans patiently waiting for the next entry in the Saw franchise shouldn’t have to wait much longer. Director Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III, IV) is returning to the series with Spiral: From the Book of Saw. The film, starring Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson, is expected to be released in 2020, although with fears surrounding the COVID-19 virus, those plans could be altered.

Another mainstay of the Saw franchise, composer Charlie Clouser, is also on board for Spiral. Clouser, also known for his work with Nine Inch Nails and Rob Zombie, has scored every entry in the Saw series thus far. He is also noted for composing the theme to American Horror Story. However, it seems Clouser has yet to work with Blumhouse. Any connection between Clouser's score for Saw and the music during the final fight scene of The Hunt is pure coincidence.
