On My Block season 3 featured a remarkable ending for the main characters - except for Cesar. The character played by Diego Tinoco took the darkest turn out of the core four that also includes Monse, Jamal, and Ruby. Rather than end on a typical cliffhanger like the previous installments of the Netflix series, season 3 went in a new direction.
Whereas season 1 of On My Block ended with a fatal shooting, season 2 concluded with the core set of characters getting kidnapped. It was quickly revealed in the most recent season that Cuchillos, the leader of the Santos gang, orchestrated the kidnapping to force Cesar, Monse, Jamal, and Ruby into finding Lil Ricky. By the end of the season, it seemed as though the dynamic of the group would never be the same. That was sadly confirmed by the two-year time jump in the season's final sequence.
Though it was disappointing to see the core four had broken up, most of them seemed to be happy with their current lives. Monse found a new group of friends on the east coast while Jamal was joking around with his football team. He and Ruby didn't share a friendly facial expression but the fact that the latter was still dating Jasmine indicated that he was content with the relationship. Even Oscar, the former leader of the Santos, somehow exited the gang life and became a family man. Cesar, however, had the bleakest ending, considering he went back to the gang that he fought so hard to get away from.
Before Cesar was "jumped in" with the Santos in On My Block season 1, he was a young teen with big aspirations. He was extremely intelligent with the hope of one day becoming an architect. Then, when his older brother got out of jail, Cesar couldn't hide from his connection to the Santos. All of the men in his family were members of the gang and he viewed that path as inevitable. Cesar fought to hang on to some type of normalcy, but that couldn't exist after he was ordered to kill a rival gang member. The consequences of Cesar's actions spilled over into his friends' lives and put many others at risk.
There was a bit of hope when Monse, Jamal, and Ruby helped buy Cesar's freedom in season 2, but even that was short-lived. The Cuchillos mess put Cesar right back into the gang drama plaguing his Los Angeles neighborhood. Considering the Santos stepped up when he was in need, it was not a total surprise that Cesar rejoined the gang, but it didn't make the situation any less heartbreaking.
Cesar questioned his brother about power when Oscar mentioned wanting more in life. It looks like Cesar filled the void left by Oscar and quickly grew among the ranks as a leader within the gang. With a fractured group of friends and nobody else looking out for Cesar, he fell back into the life he fought so hard to run from early in his life. The future of On My Block will surely focus on Cesar's situation and whether or not he has a chance at a life beyond the gang.
