This Is Us Season 5: Release Date & Story Details | Screen Rant

Here's what we know about This is Us season 5. The NBC family drama debuted in 2017 and centers on Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) Pearson along with their three kids - Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Randall (Sterling K. Brown). The story spans decades, with the series taking on a non-linear approach to storytelling, switching back-and-forth between the past and present.

The first three seasons of This Is Us primarily focused on the family's patriarch, Jack. Audiences learned about his difficult childhood with brother Nicky (Griffin Dunne), as well as his time in Vietnam. However, with This is Us going past its midpoint, the spotlight has begun to shift to Rebecca. Hints of her future were peppered in the final few episodes of This is Us season 3, and season 4 revealed additional clues as to what's in store for her moving forward.

All this is happening while the Big Three are also dealing with their respective issues. With This Is Us season 4 ending, we look forward to when the show will potentially return and what lies ahead for the Pearsons in This is Us season 5.

Thanks to its consistent high ratings performance, NBC renewed This Is Us for seasons 4-6 before the end of season 3. That means that the show is locked in until at least season 6. This follows a two-year renewal in the middle of its debut season which confirmed the show until 2018 TV season. With that, fans of the popular family comedy/drama no longer have to anxiously wait for news on whether or not the Pearsons will be back for This is Us season 5.

For the past four seasons, This Is Us premieres during the third week of September, following the typical fall TV season. Given this, it's safe to say that the plan is to also debut This is Us season 5 around the same time, but things could be a little different this year due to the current crisis brought by the coronavirus outbreak. Multiple blockbusters have been delayed significantly as part of the industry's precautions; theme parks closed down, conventions are canceled, and filming for both small and big screen projects are being indefinitely suspended. The pandemic essentially put Hollywood on standby. This Is Us typically begins filming around July, but it may not be the case. Depending on how the pandemic situation shakes out, This is Us season 5 could see a delayed premiere date.

As This Is Us continues Rebecca's story, it's safe to say that This is Us season 5 will continue to focus on her cognitive decline leading to the flash-forward scene audiences have seen a couple of times now. Similar to how the first three seasons revealed different points of Jack's life, fans can expect the same treatment for the Pearson matriarch - that means we could see her in different stages of her life. Fans already know a little bit about her family history with This Is Us season 4 focusing on the beginning of her love affair with Jack, but we might even see more of her during her much younger days. We may also finally learn how her relationship with Miguel (Jon Huertas) began.

In terms of the Big Three, Randall's life as a councilman has been sidelined in the last few episodes of This Is Us season 4, as his story focused on his personal issues, but chances are that it will somehow be a prominent part of his story come This is Us season 5. We'll continue to learn about Baby Jack's upbringing as Kate and Toby's visually-impaired son while Kevin navigates his new role as an expecting father.
