Captain America: Civil War saw the heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe divided into two groups: team Captain America and team Iron Man. Each character chose a side for different reasons, and while Vision claimed to be on the side of “life”, there were other reasons why he chose to join team Iron Man. The first three phases of the MCU had many moments that attempted to break the Avengers, and their first big test came in Captain America: Civil War, all thanks to the Sokovia Accords.
Following the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, as well as others at the beginning of Civil War, the United Nations decided to create the Sokovia Accords, which would grant them control over the Avengers’ missions with the purpose of ensuring that there would be no (or at least less) civilian casualties and property damage in the future. Of course, not everyone was on board with that plan, with Tony Stark leading the side that agreed with it and Steve Rogers leading those who were against it.
Some characters joined a team out of loyalty, others because they truly believed in either the Sokovia Accords or their own judgement, and then there’s Vision, whose reasons were more personal than he made everyone believe.
As mentioned above, Vision said he was “on the side of life”, meaning he would side with the team with the best chance to preserve the most lives, which at that moment was Iron Man’s as he felt responsible for everything that happened with Ultron and Sokovia. While this surely was one of the reasons why he sided with his creator, it definitely wasn’t the only one, as his actions throughout the film showed that what he wanted was to keep Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch safe, and joining Iron Man’s team was the best way to achieve this.
Before the airport battle between both teams, and while the Avengers were on the hunt for the Winter Soldier, Vision stayed with Wanda at the New Avengers Facility and did his best to make her comfortable. Vision then revealed to Wanda that she was confined there for her own safety at Tony’s request, and when Wanda argued that she could look after herself, Vision explained that the protection wasn’t for her and that he wanted the rest of the world to look fondly at her like he did. During the battle, he went to the aid of Scarlet Witch after War Machine used a sonic blast to subdue her. Distracted by talking to her, his energy blast missed Falcon and hit War Machine instead, injuring him badly.
Vision admitted that he knew the whole situation was going to be a catastrophe since he heard Thaddeus Ross explaining the Sokovia Accords to them. This proves that it wasn’t just being “on the side of life” what moved him to choose a team, but also Wanda’s safety, and being on Iron Man’s side was the only way he could protect her. It’s possible that was the deciding factor when picking a team, even if that didn’t work for most. Although Vision met his fate in Avengers: Infinity War, he’s set to return (somehow) in WandaVision, further expanding his story with Wanda. While it’s unlikely his real reason to choose team Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War will be addressed in WandaVision, you might want to keep it in mind when the series comes out.
