Schitt's Creek Season 7: Release Date, Story, Will It Happen?

Warning: SPOILERS for the Schitt's Creek series finale.

Here's what viewers can expect from Schitt's Creek season 7 if the Canadian comedy were to ever come back for another installment. The series was developed by father-son duo, Eugene and Dan Levy, who also play two of the show's lead characters. They were joined by Catherine O'Hara and Annie Murphy in rounding out the Rose family. The series aired on CBC in Canada and Pop TV in the U.S., but it gained immense popularity when it was added to Netflix.

Schitt's Creek followed a four-member family - Johnny (Eugene Levy), Moira (O'Hara), David (Dan Levy), and Alexis (Murphy) - after they were forced to move to a small rural town after losing their fortune. Their lives were completely turned upside down, but they learned to accept their fate and adapt to their surroundings. Along the way, they met unlikely allies, such as the town mayor, Roland Schitt (Chris Elliot), his wife, Jocelyn (Jenn Robertson), and the motel clerk, Stevie Budd (Emily Hampshire).

The Rose family's time in Schitt's Creek looked to be coming to an end with season 6. Johnny and Moira were given new career opportunities while Alexis continued building her experience in PR. After suffering a broken heart with the amicable split from Ted Mullens (Dustin Milligan), Alexis realized she might need a change of scenery. David still had goals as well, but his wedding and impending marriage to Patrick Brewer (Noah Reid) took up most of his time and energy. As season 6 inched closer to the wedding, Schitt's Creek also paved its way to a heartfelt conclusion.

Schitt's Creek season 6 was all about new beginnings for the Rose family. Unfortunately, viewers won't be along for the ride as Johnny, Moira, David, and Alexis enter the next chapters of their lives. After spending years living in conjoining motel rooms, the family will be heading in different directions. Johnny and Moira are heading to California while Alexis is moving to the Big Apple. Meanwhile, David is staying in town in an attempt to settle down with his new husband, Patrick. Stevie will also be around when she's not busy setting up new Rosebud Motel franchise locations. With the end of the series presumably brought happiness for all, albeit in different forms.

When Dan Levy developed Schitt's Creek with his father, Eugene, he always envisioned that the series would last five seasons. Following the release of season 4 in 2018, the comedy was awarded a two-season renewal. Ending with Schitt's Creek season 6 was a creative decision, not something based on ratings. In fact, Schitt's Creek is closing its run while interest is at an all-time high. The Levy family felt it was the time to say goodbye to the series. For now, Schitt's Creek season 7 isn't deemed necessary but that could change in the future. The cast and crew are leaving the door open if they feel the need to revisit the series at some point down the line.

Based on how Schitt's Creek season 6 ended, there are plenty of storylines to pick back up if Schitt's Creek were to be revived in the future. Alexis is only a short plane ride away from David and her new brother-in-law. She could also be reunited with her parents in New York City if they move there after Moira's Sunrise Bay revival is done filming. Maybe David and Patrick will rethink their plans to start a family and a new baby (or bébé as Moira would say) will force a reunion in the podunk town. As hard as it is to say goodbye to the characters of Schitt's Creek, it very well may not be the last time they grace our TV screens.
