Toy Story: 5 Reasons It's Best Pixar Series (& 5 Better Alternatives)

No studio quite captures magic and imagination in the same way as Pixar. More often than not, across their twenty-two movie filmography and a slew of shorts, they do a phenomenal job, a job which is epitomized in the Toy Story series.

When you think Pixaryou think Toy Story, but is it the definitive Pixar series of films? Are they films like no other that completely represent Pixar in the best way? Here we give five reasons why that is the case, and five alternatives for those who might want something a little different.

10 Alternative - Up

If you want a story about the power of dreaming, and the will of humans and their nature, as well as an emotional set-up that leads you on a journey that is both emotionally insightful for adults and perfectly suited for kids, Up is perfect.

There is perhaps nothing Pixar has ever or could ever do again that matches the first ten or so minutes of Up. Some will argue it does not reach those heights again, but that is an unfair expectation. Up is a beautiful, funny, and heartwarming movie that might not be as perfect as its first ten minutes, but is still excellent.

9 Toy Story - Most Iconic Catchphrases/Quotes

Iconic quotes and catchphrases may not be the first thing that jumps to your mind, but look at any great franchise in the world, and they have them, and they get ingrained in your mind.

There are famous Pixar phrases like "Just keep swimming" and "Honey... Where's my super suit?" However, none have ever or will ever reach the fame of "To infinity, and beyond!" "There's a snake in my boot" or even "This isn't flying, it's falling with style."

8 Alternative - Wall-E

In terms of filmmaking, there are no Pixar movies that compare to Wall-EIt is a superbly animated - as always - film that spends its first part not relying on dialogue, just visuals, and audio.

If something more futuristic with a social commentary that is hugely relevant and thought-provoking as well as a story that is both emotional and a joy to watch unfold is more to your taste, Wall-E may just be the definitive Pixar film.

7 Toy Story - Not One Bad Movie

There just is not a bad Toy Story movie. The four of them range from at the very least good to at most perfect. Cars disappointed with its sequels, and Monsters University was good but not up to the standard of its predecessor.

Toy Story 4 stands out as the weakest of the group purely because it arguably is unnecessary, and is not as enjoyable as the other three to a lot of people. But as an epilogue for Woody's story, it is great, and the first three movies are incredible in different ways, getting better with each entry.

6 Alternative - Inside Out

Inside Out is the newest Pixar film that will get a place on this list, and in a short time has cemented itself as one of Pixar's best, with its grand concept, stunning animation, and powerful story.

Nobody could pull off going inside the mind of an eleven-year-old girl and make it as moving, as emotional, and as beautiful as Pixar. For something beautiful but tear-inducing, and bold but in touch with feelings, Inside Out is the one.

5 Toy Story - Biggest Cast Of Iconic Characters

Every amazing Pixar movie has its amazing characters to carry on the story. However, no Pixar movie has such a large cast of characters who are both excellent and iconic in the same way as the Toy Story series.

Of course, it has the advantage of four movies, but still, the characters are amazing. Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Bullseye, Rex, Ham, the Potatoheads, the Aliens, Slinky, Bo-Peep, even the villains like Lotso and Zurg are great. Toy Story strikes a perfect combination of quality and quantity.

4 Alternative - Monsters, Inc.

Even though Pixar had looked into toys and bugs, Monsters, Inc was a whole new beast of a movie, and Pixar pulled it off phenomenally. Monsters, Inc has arguably become underrated in the past few years but deserves immense praise.

Finding Nemo deserves a shoutout on this list, but Monsters, Inc is one of Pixar's very best movies. Even though it deals with monsters, it still has a lot of gut-punch human emotion at the ready, as well as a fun adventure, and an iconic friendship. It was a revolutionary film upon release, as most Pixar movies are, and holds up to this day as a brilliant movie to watch.

3 Toy Story - It Has The Most Story

One of the most significant benefits of Toy Story having four movies is that it has such a more considerable amount of story than any other Pixar property. On top of that, just about all of the stories in the films are great.

We follow Andy as he grows up, Woody as he matures and becomes more open-minded before completing his arc, and Bo-Peep on her journey. Jessie and Bullseye have an incredibly emotional journey, and Buzz Lightyear coping with being a toy, and then becoming a leader is another spectacular character arc. There is a lot of story in Toy Story and a lot of Toy Story to love.

2 Alternative - The Incredibles

Forget animated movies; The Incredibles is often considered one of the best superhero movies of all time in general. It may well be Pixar's most enjoyable movie, and on top of that, it has a sequel that was also well-received, turning the franchise into one of the only Pixar property to have two top tier brilliant movies except Toy Story.

Rather than give a superhero origin story, the superheroes in The Incredibles already exist, and it is the villain that gets the origin story, a formula more comic-book movies should adopt, in a similar fashion to Spider-Man: Homecoming. The film is insanely fun, with fantastic character, and overall it just lives up to its name.

1 Toy Story - It Is The Flagship

The biggest reason that Toy Story is the definitive Pixar movie is that it is the flagship of Pixar. It came first. The first Pixar movie released was Toy Story in 1995, kicking off the run of magic that will get consumed for generations.

The Luxo Ball and the painted sky with clouds both come from Toy Story. It is the only franchise with four movies, the only one to cross over three separate decades (and three different generations of children), and it is remembered above all else as the collective representation of what Pixar is, and forever will be.
