Chinese Zodiac: 5 Horror Movies That Pigs Will Love (& 5 They Will Hate)

In the long-running subgenre of horror films known as creature features, animals have been used to terrify audiences for decades. Of course, the most obvious is Steven Spielberg's Jaws, in which a 30-foot Great White Shark mortified viewers from ever going back into the water. But sharks aren't the only animal to be the subject of terror in horror films.

There have been killer monkeys, deadly reptiles, murderous rats, and many more but for now, let's take this concept literally and apply it to the animal-based Chinese Zodiac, shall we? With the Year of the Pig close in the rearview, here are 5 horror movies that Pigs will love and 5 they will hate!

10 HATE: Hogzilla (2014)

Chances are, not a single pig is bound to appreciate being compared to Godzilla. Yet, in the inglorious million-dollar B-movie Hogzilla, that's precisely what transpires!

The film follows a ragtag band of news journalists who trek through the swamps of Central Florida in search of a deadly boar locals unaffectionately dub Hogzilla. Pig viewers will be even more upset to learn there is no real boarish threat at all, only a bevy of demons, ghouls, and other supernatural creatures. Talk about wrongful defamation!

9 LOVE: Pig Hunt (2008)

In the late Jim Isaacs' solid creature feature Pig Hunt, a gigantic 3,000-pound boar serves as a deity worshipped by a cult-like clan of murderous misfits. Seriously, what pig wouldn't want that kind of treatment?

John Hickman (Travis Aaron Wade) invites a gaggle of buddies to hunt wild boar on his dead uncle's remote farm. All goes well at first, but the further the men trek into the woods, the more bizarre things become. Finally, the men happen upon a twisted group of animal-torturing killers who bow to the hooves of a snarling monster-boar!

8 HATE: The Blood Lands (2014)

In the decently executed British slasher flick The Blood Lands, aka White Settlers, human murders on a rural farm frighten their unsuspecting victims by wearing freakish pig-masks. Somehow, we don't think real pigs would appreciate such a thing!

Simeon Halligan's low-budget chiller concerns Ed (Lee Williams) and Sarah's (Pollyanna McIntosh) first night christening their new farmhouse. What begins as a peacefully idyllic night turns into an abject nightmare when two barbarous interlopers trespass in pig-masks with lethal intent.

7 LOVE: Prey (2010)

The hunters become the hunted in Prey (aka Proie), Antoine Blossier's French creature-feature in which novice woodsman Nathan (Gregorie Colin) goes to extreme lengths to protect his kin during an autumnal family reunion.

During the family's first night at a wooded retreat, Nathan's father-in-law is attacked by a mysteriously aggressive deer. Nathan and a few others chase the deer into the woods to discover the cause of the creature's odd behavior. What the find, however, is a feral pig with a penchant for human blood!

6 HATE: Boar (2017)

Chances are, the brutal and unforgiving depiction of one odious pig in the 2017 film Boar is bound to ruin the experience for the rest. Point blank, this film is one of the worst bits of PR a pig will ever see!

Set in the Australian outback, horror vets Bill Moseley and John Jarrett go toe-to-hoof with a gargantuan wild boar with insatiable bloodlust for human flesh. The single-minded killing machine has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, meaning every piggish audience member is bound to disown the film.

5 LOVE: Pigs (1973)

In one of the earliest examples of porcine-horror, the titular animals are sure to take delight in feasting on a smorgasbord of human flesh. After all, they're just following orders!

Pigs concerns troubled young lady Lynn Hart (Toni Lawrence), who escapes a mental institution after being interned for killing her sexually abusive father. Lynn ends up at a rural pig from owned by a man named Zambrini (Marc Lawrence), where she lures murder victims who remind her of her father. Zambrini then feeds the corpses to his pigs, who are more than happy to oblige!

4 HATE: Chaw (2009)

South Korean filmmakers have been at the forefront of some of the best horror films of the past decade. Alas, pigs aren't likely to appreciate how whimsically humorous depiction of their threats in the 2009 film Chaw.

When a quaint and quiet mountain town in Korea is suddenly festooned with corpses, the upcoming organic food fair is put in jeopardy. The grandfather of one of the recently marauded victims determines the killer to be a ruthless wild boar and sends a crew to kill the beast. However, the entire scenario is played for more laughter than terror, making light of piggy-prowess in ways the species isn't likely to appreciate!

3 LOVE: Razorback (1984)

Russell Mulcahy's 1984 film Razorback is almost certainly the finest killer pig picture ever made. The superb Aussie import tracks a relentlessly ferocious wild boar gorily razing a small town in the outback. Due to its authenticity, intensity, and genuine terror, every pig must bow down with the utmost reverence!

The chief reason for the film is so scary is the use of a full-sized animatronic boar that cost roughly $250,000. To wit, director Mulcahy was pleasantly surprised when Steven Spielberg called him up and asked about how he achieved certain visual effects.

2 HATE: Motel Hell (1980)

While the pigs in Farmer Vincent's roadside diner at Motel Hell are likely jazzed about the predominant menu of human flesh, they're probably displeased with the killer stealing their identity.

Vincent collects tourists, cuts out their vocal cords so they can't scream for help, and fattens them up before putting them on his tasty BBQ menu. The brutal slasher-cannibal flick culminates with the killer adorning a disgusting pig head for a mask, which is sure to upset certain porcine viewers.

1 LOVE: Delicatessen (1991)

The gruesome French shocker Delicatessen would appear to be the just desserts of choice for any porcine viewer. The reason why? The tables are completely turned on the human race!

In a post-apocalyptic future where food is scarce, a French delicatessen must get creative in order to keep business thriving. Rather than serving delicious pork, the deli owner/landlord hires a cook to prepare odd delicacies for the tenants upstairs. Said menu consists of human flesh, which comes from a spate of murder victims.
