New fan art for a potential Man of Steel 2 homages an iconic Superman comic book cover. Superman's future in the unofficially-titled DCEU is uncertain. Warner Bros.' upcoming slate of DC Comics films does not feature a Superman story. However, even though there is nothing confirmed to be in the works, Superman actor Henry Cavill said he isn't finished with the character.
Man of Steel released nearly seven years ago. It served as a modern take on Superman, the first theatrical film since 2006's Superman Returns. Director Zack Snyder brought a darker, more introspective look at the character in comparison to previous films. The film was not received too well, receiving a 56% on Rotten Tomatoes. Nonetheless, Man of Steel has plenty of fans, with praise going to Cavill and General Zod actor Michael Shannon. The battles were also the grandest in a Superman film, and arguably any comic book film at that point. Zod's death at Superman's hands remains controversial, although Shannon defended it. Fans are wondering when Superman will show up after his return in Justice League, and a brief cameo in Shazam! A recent report stated the Supergirl film was being put on hold, and Warner Bros. will be centering on what to do with Superman instead. Fans would surely be ecstatic if a Man of Steel sequel were announced.
Popular artist ultraraw26 has done a piece for a potential Man of Steel 2 posted to their Instagram. If the art looks familiar, that's because it pays homage to Superman (vol. 2) #204 from DC Comics. Jim Lee did the original cover, which has gone down as one of the more iconic pieces of official Superman art. Check out ultraraw26's homage below.
It's tough to say what Warner Bros. will do with Superman going forward. Just looking at the previous films, one would assume he will appear alongside the Justice League to battle the Injustice League led by Lex Luthor. But, at the moment, that doesn't seem to be happening based on the upcoming slate. Lois Lane actress Amy Adams believes the studio is moving away from Cavill's Superman. Sadly, all fans can do now is just wait and see.
It's always a fun topic discussing what could happen in a Man of Steel sequel. Would Brainiac finally be introduced into the world of live-action? Would Metallo appear, or a more recent creation? These are questions that will hopefully be answered in the near future. In the meantime, Superman fans can look forward to a new animated film.
