Watchmen's Former Showrunner Hopes Season 2 Happens, Just Not From Him

Showrunner Damon Lindelof hopes that there will be a Watchmen season 2, but one that doesn't involve him. The series, based on the beloved graphic novel from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, was a massive hit for HBO, scoring strong ratings for the network, particularly with its finale. The show's freshman season received considerable praise, sporting an impressive 95 percent critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Due to the series' notable popularity, a second season seemed more and more likely. However, after the series wrapped up its first season, Lindelof stated that he would most likely not be returning to the show. As a result, Watchmen has since been reclassified as a limited series for HBO.

The series is set in a world where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws. A detective named Angela Abar (Regina King) investigates the rise of a white supremacist terrorist organization that seems to draw inspiration from the long-deceased Rorschach. The series stars King, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jeremy Irons, Tim Blake Nelson, Tom Mison, Jean Smart, James Wolk, and Don Johnson. Unlike Zack Snyder's 2009 adaptation, the series serves as a sequel to Moore's graphic novel, taking place thirty years after the events of the original story. Though the series remained quite faithful when referencing the source material, it also made some notable changes, particularly to the original book's ending.

In an interview with ComicBook, showrunner Damon Lindelof discussed his hopes for Watchmen season 2 but confirmed he doesn't wish to be involved. When talking about the possibility of returning for a season 2, Lindelof stated,

"I would facilitate and embrace and do everything in my power to enable others to come forward and show their take on Watchmen. Look, you're a comic book website and publication. I'm a huge lover of comics. There's a great tradition in the field of comic books unlike no other where a new writer and artist basically take a run on an iconic character. Where would we be without Frank Miller's run on Daredevil or Ta-Nehisi Coates' run on Black Panther or Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing? I hope there's more Watchmen. I don't think it should be me."

Although the show's finale seemingly wrapped up the main storyline, there are still some burning questions that a second season could answer. However, Lindelof has recently revealed that he doesn't have any ideas for season 2. Besides, series star Regina King has stated she would only return for season 2 if she knew where the story would end. Though it appears Lindelof will not be returning to the fold if a season 2 should arise, the idea of the show becoming an anthology series has been floated by the showrunner, possibly tackling an entirely new story each season.

Watchmen was a genuine delight when it aired on HBO in late 2019, not only paying homage to Moore's classic graphic novel but successfully being able to stand on its own two feet and deliver something different and refreshing for fans. The series was complex but accessible, and outstanding in terms of its writing, performances, and overall direction. Though some fans may be disappointed to hear that Lindelof will most likely not return for season 2, they can still go back and revisit Watchmen season 1 as they await further news about a possible follow-up.
