What To Expect From Young Sheldon Season 4 | Screen Rant

Young Sheldon season 4 is already on the CBS pipeline and will explore Sheldon's first semester at East Texas Tech, but its release may be delayed. The Big Bang Theory's spin-off debuted in 2017 and tackles the Sheldon Cooper's (Iain Armitage) early years in Galveston, Texas. With three years in, the show has built it own loyal fanbase invested in what's next not just for the boy genius but also for his whole family.

Young Sheldon season 3 ended with Sheldon convincing his mother to let him attend college. After a conflict between George Sr. (Lance Barber) and Mary (Zoe Perry) on whether or not they should let their kid pursue his undergraduate degree despite only being 11, they ultimately agreed to let Sheldon enroll full time to East Texas Tech. Though the season 3 finale, "A Secret Letter and a Lowly Disc of Processed Meat," wasn't planned as the last episode, the coronavirus shortened Young Sheldon's production schedule.

Now that fans are looking forward to Sheldon's future studies, what is in store for Young Sheldon, and when can fans expect to see the boy genius return to the small screen?

Ratings for Young Sheldon in its third season were slightly lower than its previous year. While it has yet to post viewership like its parent series during its peak years, Young Sheldon fills the programming void that The Big Bang Theory left when it wrapped last year. While fans of Young Sheldon had to settle for 21 episodes for season 3 instead of 22, they will be thrilled to know that the series is already locked in for season 4. On the heels of The Big Bang Theory's finale, CBS positioned Young Sheldon as its parent series' replacement resulting in the spin-off sequel getting a two-season renewal in early 2019. This means that it's confirmed to run until at least the 2020-2021 fall TV cycle.

When it debuted, Young Sheldon was an accompanying show to The Big Bang Theory, which was why its first two premieres were tied to its parent series' release schedule. Season 3 was its first year to stand as its own, but it maintained its third week of September premiere. Filming for the spin-off typically begins in the summer, giving the show several weeks of head start before new episodes air, but considering the current global health crisis brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, this might not be the case. The situation already pushed back multiple film releases and shut down countless productions. Depending on how things pan out in the next few months, it could also hinder production start for the show, effectively delaying Young Sheldon season 4.

As Young Sheldon's season 3 finale ended with George and Mary agreeing to let Sheldon enroll as a full-time college student at East Texas Tech, fans can expect season 4 to deal with his first year as a university student. According to The Big Bang Theory canon, Sheldon finished his undergraduate studies at age 14, giving the series three more years before he moved to California for his graduate studies at Caltech.

Sheldon moving to college will also bring some big changes in the Cooper household. While George and Mary's marriage continues to thrive, a separation is in the horizon as George begins an affair behind his wife's back. Meanwhile, viewers can also look forward to Georgie's (Montana Jordan) arc as Young Sheldon lays the ground for his future as a successful business owner of Dr. Tire.
