Sookie St. James is Gilmore Girls' resident source of comic relief - if such a thing is ever needed in a series that is already absolutely hilarious.
Sookie gives the show a sense of wholesomeness and brightness that is a reliable comfort to meet with each dive into the world of Star's Hollow. But is everything about her pleasant? There are times when Sookie can go a bit over-board and serve as a challenge to stomach with her strong personality and frequent strong-headedness. Here are five ways we love Sookie and five she's kind of the worst.
10 Love Her: She's Good Humored
Sookie is always up for a good time. She greets the day with enthusiasm and enjoys playfully bantering with Lorelai whenever she comes into the kitchen for a chat. There is a general warmth to Sookie that makes her approachable and pleasant for people in the show and viewers alike.
9 She's The Worst: She Exhausts Her Kitchen Staff
It's never really discussed, but if one pays attention to any of the cooking scenes with Sookie in her kitchen she is almost always abusing the kitchen staff in some way, even if it's subtle.
For the sake of the comedy in the show, it doesn't matter so much to see Sookie throwing around hot pots and pans and expecting her staff to risk their safety and clean up her huge messes, but in reality, this would be highly alarming.
8 Love Her: She Cares For Rory
Sookie has an unwavering affection for Rory. Rory doesn't really have much close family, never mind extended family, and Sookie fills much of this void. She is the aunt who shows up with fresh baked cookies, the cousin who playfully teases, the sister who is dying to know how the date went. Sookie is basically family to Rory and Lorelai, and it endears her to viewers' hearts.
7 She's The Worst: She's Unreasonable
If she gets something in her head, there is no talking Sookie out of it. Sookie has a habit of going on wild tirades, be it about the quality of the fruit that day or how she was referred to in a review. If someone has offended her, she cannot be distracted from it until she finds her own closure. This could be admirable, but is usually excessive and not in proportion to the supposed offense.
6 Love Her: She's Passionate
Cooking is Sookie's greatest passion in life, and she puts her all into it. It's great to watch characters who commit to their life's aspiration, and Sookie is certainly one of these. She believes in the quality of her cooking and never disappoints. She exists as the chef she aspires to be, an example of someone making their dream a reality.
5 She's The Worst: She's Immature
Sookie is not unknown for throwing tantrums. There are times when Lorelai really needs her support as a friend or business partner, and Sookie simply doesn't show up for it. She is known for being absent-minded and easily overwhelmed, but this is no excuse for an adult who people rely on for important things. Sookie has trouble seeing her flaws and takes a long time to come around to owning up to her poor behavior.
4 Love Her: She Challenges Luke
Luke goes pretty much unchallenged in regards to his cooking, but Sookie tends to this. Sookie and Luke are greatly different characters.
In fact, Sookie could almost be seen as the goofy, light-hearted foil to the serious and cynical Luke. When they do end up on-screen together Sookie pushes Luke out of his comfort zone, creating a very interesting dynamic that puts both characters in a different light than usual.
3 She's The Worst: She Gives In To Jackson
Jackson and Sookie's romance was charming and lovely to begin with, but as time went on Jackson become more and more of a terror. He every once in a while has his moments, but for the most part, he asserts his ideas and preferences and considers them the rule. What's worse than his behavior is watching Sookie give in to it, tip-toeing around him and allowing him to treat Lorelai rudely when she encourages Sookie to think for herself.
2 Love Her: She's Unapologetically Herself
Perhaps the best thing about Sookie is that, despite all her strange quirks and annoying tendencies, she is very much herself. She never tries to be anybody that she isn't, and she shows no shame for the ridiculous situations he often gets herself in. She owns her behavior and embraces who she is.
1 She's The Worst: She Has Little Self-Awareness
It isn't uncommon to see Sookie burst into a fit of enthusiasm over a new cooking idea, and, caught up in the moment, set her sleeve on fire, or drop a knife, or do something else generally considered dangerous that puts both herself and those around her at risk. It's amazing how little regard she has for how her actions relate to the world around her; and while sometimes it's charming and it makes her who she is, it can also get excessive and annoying.
