The Order Of The Phoenix is one of the most organizations in the world of Harry Potter. The group of esteemed witches and wizards existed in their first incarnation in the fight against Lord Voldemort in the height of his power and reformed to fight him off after his return at the end of The Goblet Of Fire. While their position in the Order earns them a certain right to claim bravery and intelligence, they aren’t all exactly geniuses.
We’ve ranked the most important members of the Order by how intelligent the books and films make them seem.
11 Mundungus Fletcher
When your nickname from almost everybody you interact with most is literally just the word ‘Dung’ you have to start thinking about whether you’re respected. Mundungus Fletcher was a liar and a thief, as well as the main reason Mad-Eye Moody was killed. We certainly don’t like him, and his intelligence was rock bottom.
10 Peter Pettigrew
The man who betrayed Harry’s parents and allowed them to be killed by Voldemort spent so long pretending to be a rat that he ended up looking like a human hybrid experiment gone wrong.
He might have had a hand in the creation of the Marauders Map and became an Animagus, which certainly gains him a couple of points, but the way he gave in to the dark side just about sums up his weak-willed personality and lack of moral intelligence.
9 Rubeus Hagrid
The first two entries onto this list were some pretty catastrophically horrible people. Rubeus Hagrid, of course, is probably the truest and most lovely person in all of Harry Potter history. Although Hagrid is quite skilled with his broken wand (even able to cast non-verbal spells) and became professor for Care of Magical Creatures, he falls short on one degree: due to the actions of Tom Riddle, Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts before finishing his studies. As such, he doesn’t have the knowledge of everyone else.
8 Arthur Weasley
Arthur Weasley is a strange one. Technically, he has a good job at the Ministry and provides for his family while remaining a source of inspiration for everyone around him.
Despite his job directly involving muggles and muggle artifacts, he doesn’t seem to have learned a single thing in his role, and how he landed it in the first place is almost incomprehensible: “What exactly is the function of a rubber duck?”.
7 Nymphadora Tonks
Tonks has the incredible ability to morph into just about anything she pleases. This is an impressive gift that makes her stand apart from everyone else, but it is an innate talent. Her intelligence comes from her time at Hogwarts: she was a high-achieving student who took her academic gifts into her Auror studies, where she got full-marks too (though her clumsiness brought down her stealth attributes).
6 Remus Lupin
Remus Lupin is often hailed as the best Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts, for good reason. He's a skilled spellcaster and is capable of producing an impressive Patronus. As a teenager, he even had a hand in the creation of the Marauder's Map, further proving his prowess. However, Remus' ultimate pitfall is his emotional intelligence. He's made a few poor decisions in his life and is ultimately slightly overshadowed by many of his friends in the Order.
5 Sirius Black
In part due to being played by Gary Oldman, Sirius Black sounds as though he reads a new Shakespeare play every day. His cousin Bellatrix Lestrange has the deepest and strongest London accent in the world, while Sirius is as posh as they come. However, Sirius is shown to be extremely intelligent when it comes to magic as well.
Like the rest of the Marauders, he assisted in the creation of the Marauder's Map and learned to become an Animagus so that Remus wouldn't be alone during full moons. Furthermore, he managed to evade capture for a number of years after escaping Azkaban while living in his Animagus form, proving how strong his survival skills were.
4 Kingsley Shacklebolt
We didn’t see a whole lot about Kingsley Shacklebolt in the Harry Potter franchise, but we were given a variety of clues to his intelligence. He was introduced as a high ranking Ministry official, which suggests a certain level of impressiveness to land the job in the first place. After the end of the series he was made Minister For Magic, and remember, he could also make his Patronus talk.
3 Alastor Moody
We might not have been able to see a lot of Alastor Moody during his time at Hogwarts (as he was at the bottom of a huge pit of a box), but afterward, he proved why he was considered the best Auror in the game.
Dark wizards were scared of him, and “half the cells in Azkaban are full because of him" which is a pretty impressive resume.
2 Severus Snape
No matter where you fall on the ‘was Snape a good guy?’ debate, you can’t argue with the man’s intelligence. Firstly, he was a skilled potion maker, to the point where his writings we so good that they improved Harry’s work. Beyond that, he spent his entire life being able to fool the most powerful Dark Wizard ever into believing that he was on his side, while actually working for Dumbledore the entire time.
1 Albus Dumbledore
Much like Snape, Dumbledore was a bit of a controversial figure in the world of Harry Potter. He forced Harry on a strange chase to solve riddles when he could have just said everything outright, for example.
Despite that, he was the most powerful wizard alive and the only person Voldemort feared. He had the ability to understand and perform just about every spell imaginable and was a constant source of knowledge for every character throughout the franchise.
