Apple has announced Tom Hanks' WWII naval drama Greyhound will be released on Apple TV+ in July. Directed by Aaron Schneider and starring Hanks, who also wrote the screenplay, Greyhound follows a U.S. Navy Commander during the Battle of the Atlantic, which took place in 1942, just after the U.S. officially entered WWII.
TheWrap reports Greyhound, originally slated to be released by Sony Pictures in May before Sony removed the film from the release calendar, will now be released by Apple TV+ on July 10. Though the film was originally scheduled by Sony for a theatrical release, Greyhound will now be skipping theaters altogether due to the coronavirus pandemic, and will instead stream directly on Apple TV+. Tom Hanks himself had to sign off on Sony and Apple TV+'s Greyhound transfer, and Apple TV+ paid Sony $70 million to acquire the streaming rights for 15 years.
This news comes amid many film delays due to the pandemic, such as Black Widow, while some films such as Artemis Fowl and The Lovebirds have been switched over to streaming platforms in lieu of a theatrical release. This looks to be a trend that many more studios will follow in the coming months in order to mitigate losses and still make new films available to fans.
The film is based on the 1955 C.S. Forester novel The Good Shepherd, also stars Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, and Elizabeth Shue. Greyhound will stream July 10 on Apple TV+.
