Godzilla vs Kong: How & Why Kong Looks So Different In The Sequel

Kong is back for Godzilla vs. Kong, but how much will he have changed since his last MonsterVerse appearance? New artwork for the film has provided a clue as to how much he's changed over the decades. It’s been over 45 years since the titular Titan contended with the military and saved his home from the Skullcrawlers in Kong: Skull Island, so a significant amount of time has passed. Released in 2017, the second MonsterVerse movie took place in 1973.

The King of Skull Island will return to the big screen in Godzilla vs. Kong, the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse, but due to multiple delays, the movie is now scheduled to hit theaters in May 2021. Directed by Adam Wingard, Godzilla vs. Kong will feature a definitive winner when the two Titans have their long-awaited showdown. As for the story, it will revolve around what was teased in the credits of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which revealed that the secret government organization known as Monarch will begin an exploration of the Hollow Earth. Monarch’s investigation into the origin of the Titans of the MonsterVerse will somehow be linked with a human conspiracy to eliminate the monsters for good.

Box art from the packaging of a Godzilla vs. Kong action figure has revealed a good look at the two Titans battling it out on top of what appears to be an aircraft carrier. From this image, it’s clear that Kong will have changed a great deal since Skull Island. As previously reported, Kong has gone through a massive growth spurt (which is explained by the fact that he wasn’t an adult in Skull Island). He was only 104 feet tall in his first MonsterVerse movie, which was less than a third of Godzilla’s towering height of 393 feet in King of the Monsters. Now, his height is close to even with Godzilla’s. This is without a doubt the biggest change, but not the only one. It would seem that Kong now has a beard of fur on his chin. It’s much more noticeable in another piece of artwork for Godzilla vs. Kong.

These are just the physical differences that Kong will have in the sequel. After all, by this point in Kong’s life cycle, he should be well into his adulthood. It’s possible that, with age, has come a bit of wisdom for Kong. In the decades that Kong has kept Skull Island safe, it’s likely that he’s learned a lot from his battles with the monsters that live beneath the earth. Titans in general are said to be incredibly intelligent, but Kong in particular is known for his impressive intellect. Kong has the capacity to learn from his mistakes and his past experiences with other monsters.

This is sure to be a great asset for him when he goes up against Godzilla. It could be that Kong’s intelligence will lead him to fashion a giant stone axe (revealed in leaked photos of Godzilla vs. Kong toys). If so, this would be one way Kong’s fighting style will differ from his approach to the Skrullcrawlers. Either way, Legendary – similar to what Toho did in 1962’s King Kong vs Godzilla – has improved Kong in preparation for his fight with Godzilla, but it remains to be seen if it will be enough to dethrone the King of the Monsters.
