Viewers are obsessed with Netflix's new series, Indian Matchmaking. This "Desi" reality show has given us so many unforgettable moments. While some were cringe-worthy, others were simply amusing. But whether you chuckled or covered your face in horror, there's no denying that certain scenes are painfully relatable.
Indian Matchmaking follows the journey of several Indian and Indo-American singles as they enter the world of arranged marriages. With the help of charismatic matchmaker Sima Taparia, the cast looks for their other half as they lean into the tradition of arranged marriage. As always, the show can't please everyone. Some viewers aren't happy with the content and have deemed it highly stereotypical. Despite this criticism, the large has connected with a large audience, in large part due to the highly relatable scenes.
When it comes down to it, finding someone to marry is difficult, whether the union is arranged or not. Fans particularly connected to a moment between Akshay and his mother, Preeti. While discussing Akshay's single status, Preeti tells her son, "My BP gets high because of you." This is pretty much the reaction of all parents as soon as a single person surpasses the age of 25. Poor, Akshay, he hasn't even dated anyone or ever fell in love! Let him breathe, Preeti! Preeti also told Akshay that he had to get married so his brother could have a child. Understandably, fans were confused about the correlation between those two. In fact, we'd like Preeti to share a press release explaining how one thing affects the other. Beyond Preeti's high expectations for her sons, many people connected with the idea that young, single Americans are often pressured into marriage by their elders. However, try as they might to find a relationship, they can't just conjure up a partner out of thin air. The tweet below perfectly captures that sentiment:
As shown in the above tweet, dedicated fans of Indian Matchmaking found much wisdom in Sima's words, even if they didn't apply them in the right context. Sima often discusses the intervention of the universe and the idea of destiny. She believes that it is her duty to bring two souls to the person they're meant to be with. Of course, the idea of destiny isn't quite as romantic when applied to other aspects of life, as the tweet below shows:
Sima was one relatable character on Indian Matchmaking, but Aparna was another. Well, relatable might be pushing it. Instead, people quickly realized that Aparna is rather difficult, which is probably why she is single. Still, her words on the show prompted plenty of tweets, most of which made fun of her lackluster approach to life. From saying that she hates comedy to discussing how much she dislikes being a lawyer, Aparna gave viewers plenty to laugh at. Take a look at two tweets that capture of of her most ridiculous statements below:
By the way Twitterati reacted to this show, we don't think it will get renewed. But the creator of the show, Smriti Mundhra, is hopeful and has big ideas for the next season. In an interview, she said, "Now that people know what to expect, I suspect there are going to be people who will reach out to us for season two, who want to be on the show specifically to bring up issues—whether it's patriarchy, colorism, or religious diversity." Indian Matchmaking did give us some hilarious moments, an unapologetic personality in Aparna, and a total sweetheart in Vyasar. We'd love to see a more evolved version of the show for season two.
All episodes of Indian Matchmaking are now available to stream on Netflix.
