Justice League Storyboard Artist Knew Snyder Cut Would Come Out

Storyboard artist Jay Oliva knew that Zack Snyder's Justice League was eventually releasing. A couple of months ago, fans of the Release of the Snyder Cut movement finally got what they wanted - the announcement that the original version of the DC ensemble fill will be coming out through HBO Max. The director announced this himself after hosting a watch party for Man of Steel - the 2013 movie that kicked off the DCEU.

For context, Oliva worked with Snyder during the conception of Justice League, however, when the director exited the project due to a personal tragedy, the artist also cut ties with the production. This means that he's not involved with any additional work that interim filmmaker Joss Whedon did for the film. Nevertheless, given Oliva's involvement at the early stage of the movie's development, he knew what Snyder's intended plan was - even confirming that the final cut of Justice League was very different from how Snyder intended it to be. With this, he opens up about his thoughts about the Snyder Cut officially releasing.

Appearing at a panel at the fan-organized Justice Con, Oliva was asked what his reaction was when it was confirmed that Snyder's Justice League was releasing. The artist admitted that he didn't know about the surprise announcement, but he always knew that it was eventually going to be rolled out  because "it just makes sense."

I knew it was gonna happen... I've been in pretty close contact with Zack for I don't know, since probably the beginning of 2019. I would kinda talk to him every now and then on a pretty regular basis, not just for work, for everything... not just to shoot this sh*t and stuff... So, I kinda already knew the lay of the land where some things were going anyways. Again, I wasn't a hundred percent positive that they would pull the trigger or when it would happen, I just know it's gonna happen. Like I said in my tweets, I always say it just makes sense right? You already paid for this movie, there's a large fan base who wants to see it, who's willing to pay for it, why not? Again, this opens up new subscriptions, you know streaming service, what better way to get more to your streaming service than something that they definitely want to see and so I knew it was just a matter of time before it was gonna happen. Now the actual announcement... I didn't know so that's why I joined that event that Zack announced, I was just watching and I was like 'oh, so this is what they plan on doing, that's cool!'... I always knew it would come out, it's just a matter of time.

Oliva was one of the more vocal crew members who worked closely with Snyder on Justice League, so fans typically turned to him for any Snyder Cut-related questions. In July 2018, he cast doubt on rumors about the much-clamored version of the film after rumors started spreading that Snyder screened his version for some Warner Bros. executives and was planning on releasing a trailer. He also cautioned fans about getting too invested in hearsay. To be fair, there's no solid evidence that this was happening two years ago just as what the rumbles claimed, so perhaps Oliva was only warning people not to get too caught up on such reports. Ironically, Snyder ultimately screened his version of Justice League to studio higher-ups early this year which led to his surprise announcement back in May.

It's difficult to argue with Oliva's argument, however. From a business standpoint, releasing Zack Snyder's Justice League is a good business move for Warner Bros. and HBO Max, especially if they want more subscribers to their new streaming service. This was also the reasoning HBO Max boss Tony Goncalves gave when they were criticized for their decision to release the Snyder Cut - saying that they have to listen to what the public wants. Some pointed out that this sets a bad precedent for fandoms when it comes to demanding something from studios considering that there was a pocket of the movement who have displayed bad behavior throughout the whole debacle. Admittedly, it's still too early to gauge how the success of the Release of the Snyder Cut movement will affect how fan communities operate moving forward - if it will at all.
