The Saw franchise is one of the most overlooked and underrated franchises in both the history of horror and the history of film. Often palmed off as nothing more than "torture porn," many ignore the fact that the franchise is centered on an intriguing, unique, and twist-filled storyline that runs throughout the bottom of all eight films.
Having said that, many fans of Saw are only in it for the traps. Devious designs created to inflict pure pain on their unsuspecting victims. The Reverse Bear Trap is often considered the most famous trap from the franchise, so we’ve kicked the list off with that before delving into the most deadly traps the series has to offer.
10 The Reverse Bear Trap
Of course, the most famous of all Saw traps is the Reverse Bear Trap. It could be considered Jigsaw’s signature trap thanks to its prominence so early in the franchise, but it is one of the few traps that actually makes multiple appearances across the franchise. The basic idea of the trap is that the victim's head is placed into a metal helmet that rips open at the end of a timer. In the first film, Amanda managed to escape after cutting a key from within a paralyzed man, but its appearance in Saw VII is much more graphic...
9 The Pound Of Flesh
While this one is highly likely to have been influenced by its appearance in Se7en, the term "pound of flesh" originates, like many things, with William Shakespeare. Jigsaw’s use of it isn’t exactly Shakespearian in execution, though.
In Saw VI, he places Simone and Eddie in one of his biggest and most competitive traps yet. The idea was simple: whoever could cut off the most flesh would tip the scales and be spared.
8 The Death Mask
Another of Jigsaw’s most fiendishly famous traps was the Death Mask. It was relatively standard in its approach; a trap in which the victim would have to seriously mutilate themselves in order to avoid death.
In this case, the mutilation forced them to dig out their own eye to retrieve a key which Jigsaw had placed there, and the potential death came from a mask ready to clamp over their head at the end of the timer.
7 The Horsepower Trap
As the Saw franchise went on, it was able to create bigger-budget set-pieces that would bring traps to the absolute pinnacle of dramatic tension. Of course, with it came a need to suspend disbelief somewhat, but it didn’t stop the traps from being brutal. The Horsepower Trap placed Evan, Kara, Dan, and Jake into a garage in which a chain of brutal deaths would follow Evan’s failure to rip his body from a car seat.
6 The Classroom Trap
Set in a classroom, the victim—in Saw III this was Troy, who failed the test—would be sat on a chair with chains that were pierced through the victim’s body. This test was created by Amanda Young, Jigsaw’s corrupt apprentice, meaning that it was impossible to escape. If the victim ripped everything out, they would be left with no jaw, and no way to get out of the room. If they failed, they’d be blown up.
5 The Pendulum Trap
One of Jigsaw’s most straightforward designs was the Pendulum Trap. It forced its victim to crush their own hands by holding them down on buttons that would stop the swing of a pendulum coming towards them. It would brutally begin to slice into their body at 30 seconds, and, 60 seconds in, the body would be cut in half completely. Deadly, to say the least.
4 The Needle Pit
While the Needle Pit doesn’t seem like the most brutal or painful of Jigsaw’s many traps, it was one of the hardest to watch and had a lot of secondary sources of pain. The 12,000 syringes in the trap were all previously used, meaning they were being repeatedly stabbed from every angle with potentially disease-riddled needles as they desperately searched for a key. The key unlocked the door to an antidote to the nerve agent that filled the room.
3 The Freezer Room
The Freezer Room was, as you probably guessed, a massive freezer. Used in Saw III, the main victim was chained up and sprayed with icy water that would eventually freeze them to death while the second victim had to grab a key from behind a series of cooling pipes.
The slow torture and inevitable death involved in this one made it one of the most brutal traps in the series.
2 The Furnace
On the other side of the heat spectrum, we have The Furnace. In Saw II, Jigsaw placed Obi Tate into a room that contained a furnace that was slowly bringing flame towards the victim and a syringe with the nerve gas antidote. He eventually died while trying to crawl his way out of the room.
1 The Angel Trap
Allison Kerry’s trap in Saw III saw her placed into a harness and suspended above the floor. Metal devices were locked into her ribcage, and the only way she could avoid having her ribs torn apart was to retrieve a key that was stored inside a jar of acid. Alison not only melted her hands trying to get the key, but she failed and was torn apart.
