Hamilton Was Watched By More People In July Than Anything On Netflix

Disney+'s Hamilton officially ranks as the most-watched film or TV show across all streaming platforms in July, beating out any Netflix series or film. Hamilton's star and creator, Lin Manuel-Miranda, initially intended to compile recorded footage of his Tony Award-winning musical, Hamilton, for a future theatrical release. However, with Broadway shutting down until at least 2021, Manuel decided to gift the world with an early release on Disney+. Ever since Hamilton hit Disney+ on the July 4th weekend, it has become a phenomenon that people can't stop talking about.

Netflix, however, had a much less eventful month. In the past, Netflix has had extremely successful Julys. Just last year, Netflix released Stranger Things season 3 the July 4th weekend, which brought in a lot of viewers. The streaming platform didn't have too much to offer this July however. The Netflix Unsolved Mysteries reboot was released at the beginning of the month with The Baby Sitters Club following shortly after of July 3rd. Soon after came the original Netflix feature The Old Guard. The month rounded out with the much-anticipated sequel The Kissing Booth 2 and season 10 of the hit Showtime series Shameless.

According to Variety, none of these Netflix titles were nearly as enticing as Disney+'s Hamilton. According to 7Park Data stats provided to Variety Intelligence Platform, 37.1% of the viewers studied under the 7Park Data watched Hamilton in the month of July. While 37.1% seems like a small number, it is an overwhelmingly high percentage relatively speaking in regards to the 7Park analytics. No other series or film comes close, giving Hamilton the most-watched spot. The 2nd most-watched spot goes to Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries watched among only 13.7% of viewers. Amazon's most-series Hanna was watched by 9.6% of viewers, and Hulu's new original feature Palm Springs was only watched by 8.1%. The highest any series scored in June 2020 was Netflix's Space Force at 8.3%.

Hamilton pulled impressive figures in other categories of 7Park Data's analysis. Not only did the highest percentage of viewers tune into Disney+'s Hamilton, but the viewers did spend more time watching Hamilton than any other series or movie. According to 7Park Data, a viewer must spend more than 2 minutes watching a title in order for it to count in this analysis. Hamilton secured the top spot once again over the category's typical victors The Office, Grey's Anatomy, and Parks and Recreation. While Hamilton is without a doubt longer than an episode of these series, these series have upwards of seven seasons that add up to a higher total than Hamilton's 160 minutes.

With Hamilton, Disney+ offers viewers a unique experience that not many other streaming platforms have to offer at a time when it was needed most. Hamilton allowed families to bring Broadway into their homes. Even though the musical is long, its fast-paced and engaging energy has proven to be successful both for live theater and on screen. While other platforms have offered a very limited number of recordings of live musicals like Netflix's Shrek, these musicals weren't nearly as successful or in-demand as Hamilton. Additionally, people are craving theater now more than ever now that Broadway is closed down. The success of Hamilton could easily lead to a new trend of pre-recorded live theater becoming available to stream.
