Kathleen Kennedy, the President of LucasFilm, wanted Nia DaCosta to direct a future Star Wars movie. Kennedy has previously said that the company would like to hire more female directors. Previously, Bryce Dallas Howard and Deborah Chow have directed episodes of The Mandalorian. Chow has also been announced as the showrunner of the new Obi Wan-Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor.
DaCosta is directing the upcoming remake 0f the '90s film Candyman and is currently a hot commodity in Hollywood. She won the Nora Ephron Prize at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019 for her crime thriller film, Little Woods. DaCosta was also recently announced as the director of the Captain Marvel sequel, which makes her the first Black female director to direct an MCU film. Now, it looks like she almost had a shot on another big franchise.
Kathleen Kennedy spoke to The Wrap about how Lucasfilm is hoping to shape the future of the franchise after the Skywalker Saga. She said that they aim to take a step back and absorb what Geroge Lucas had created, but this has also given them a chance to meet with different filmmakers and hear their pitches on future Star Wars properties. When asked about whether they would hire more women in the future, Kennedy said, "It's absolutely a priority.'' She went on to specifically name the Candyman director saying, “I was actually sad because I love Nia DaCosta, who was just announced to do Captain Marvel [2]. She’s another director I’ve been watching, and I think she’s enormously talented.”
However, just because DaCosta is directing a Marvel film does not mean that she cannot direct a Star Wars film in the future. A famous example of someone doing both is Taika Waititi, who in addition to directing and voicing a character in The Mandalorian, is developing a Star Wars film project with Lucasfilm and directing Thor: Love and Thunder for Marvel. If anything, a director who has experience in big-budget films is a positive for the franchise. It would be interesting to see DaCosta's version of the events that took place in the Star Wars universe.
It seems if DaCosta is on Lucasfilm's radar, it can only mean good things, and we might get a DaCosta Star Wars film in the future. But this still means that there are plenty more female directors who are making their mark on film and TV who could be considered to direct Star Wars films in the future.
