Parks and Recreation: 10 Season 1 Jokes Everyone Completely Missed

The first season of Parks and Recreation is tonally different than the rest of the series as the team was still trying to figure out the characters and storylines they wanted to pursue throughout the series. The first season focused mainly on Leslie Knope and disproportionately didn't focus on any of the other characters like Ron Swanson even though they're present.

The series was also trying to figure out the type of comedy and tone they wanted to have so some of the jokes in the first season are different than the rest of the series, but they are still funny and quick-witted nonetheless.

10 Leslie Not Being Bothered When Tom Hits On Ann

In the pilot episode, Ann is at the town hall that Tom and Leslie are running and Tom immediately hits on her, while he's already married. Ann is thrown off and asks if he's seriously hitting on her right now, to which Tom points out that he's married and is around attractive women all the time.

Leslie never feels the need to jump in and stop him and keeps nodding her head throughout the entire exchange, which seems pretty out of character for her. But the first season had Tom fooling Leslie most of the time and it seems funny and out of place given later seasons.

9 This Could Be My Hoover Dam

When Ann asks Leslie and the parks department to fill the dangerous pit by her house Leslie muses that this could be her Hoover Dam moment. It's a funny and quick moment as the character once again puts much more weight and gravitas to her job than it warrants.

Also, although the Hoover Dam is a well-known structure and bears the name of a U.S. President, there were issues with its construction that caused worker and wildlife death that Leslie probably doesn't also want to cause when she builds a park over the pit.

8 The Cat Problem

Leslie mentions that one of the projects she is proudest of is when she led a team to disinfect the sandboxes at all the local parks given the recent cat problem they had. Leslie doesn't explain exactly what happens because all the clues are there.

There was a cat problem in public sand meaning that there were outside and stray cats using the sand as a bathroom. The pause that Leslie has after she sets up the situation makes the joke even funnier.

7 Leslie Calling Andy Son

Leslie goes to Ann and Andy Dwyer's house to check in on the pit outside their house and meet Andy after Ann said that he fell into the pit. Leslie treats him like a child and a hero, being extra nice and speaking with a quiet voice when addressing him.

She also calls him son, which is hilarious because they're not that different in age, although they are quite different in maturity.

6 Leslie Cheated In An Election

Leslie says that she was voted best dressed in middle school and won by 87 votes, but there were only 63 people in her class.

She says it's because she changed the hearts and minds of those around her by canvassing and fighting for her chance to win, which could be true but one would think the only people allowed to vote for best dressed in their grade would be the students that were in her grade. It's funny that she's so proud of this since she's a stickler for rules most of the time.

5 Middle School Smear Job

Leslie is worried about her first official press interview and takes Mark Brandanowicz out for coffee to ask him about how she should strategize.

Mark asks her about the interview she did for the middle school paper but she quickly dismisses it and doesn't consider it a real interview and claims it was a smear job against her. It is so out of place and a quick line that makes the viewer wonder what kind of interview that was.

4 The Sound Of The Glass Ceiling Being Shattered

Leslie tries to break up the boys' club of the local government by convincing Ann to join her in drinking beers in the courtyard with other government employees. She leans on the table and immediately all of the beers fall to the ground and the glass bottles shatter.

Leslie tells the camera that it was the sound of the glass ceiling being shattered and is still confident even after the bad intro.

3 A Young Lawbreaker, A Future Leslie Knope

Leslie is upset that she gave in to temptation and accepted a gift over $25 of wine and cheese, which is against the local rules for government employees. April Ludgate then gets into the wine and posts a video of herself drinking wine and getting drunk, even though she's only 19 years old.

Leslie is spiraling and instead of comforting her, Tom throws out this line about April being a young Leslie Knope.

2 The Barber Who Cuts Larry Bird's Hair

Leslie is excited to go to a big banquet event to celebrate her mother winning an award so she decides to get her haircut at a famous barbershop. She claims that this barber is who everyone who's anyone in Indiana goes to to get their hair cut.

Leslie says that this is the same barber who makes Larry Bird look the way he does, it's a funny little moment because she doesn't say that Larry Bird or his hair actually looks good.

1 Ron Climbing A Tree

After going out to see Andy's band perform Ron and Tom are leaving with their partners and a drunk Ron randomly asks if anyone wants to see him climb a tree.

Although the audience doesn't get to see it, the mental image of Ron Swanson climbing a tree is a hilarious thought that audiences should hold onto.
