After twelve seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race and five seasons of All Stars, it comes as no surprise that the show has a lot of behind-the-scenes secrets that fans may not be aware of. These little tidbits of information may vary in terms of range and importance, but they still prompt one to rethink about the way that a season was perceived when it aired.
With so many queens to have come out of the show, these secrets have been spilled over the years by different sources and in different manners. Nonetheless, these types of information can all reshape the experience of re-watching a season years later.
10 Season 3 Went On A Break For A Few Weeks
Every Drag Race fan remembers the iconic Shangela quote to Mimi Imfurst, where Shangie defended herself from accusations of having a 'sugar daddy.' However, what many fans don't know is that season 3 had a weeks-long break after this infamous scene. Re-watching the season, one can notice that there is a visible difference in the appearance of the contestants between episodes 3 and 4. A few of them had even grown full beards and changed haircuts.
Years later, queens like Alexis Mateo and Stacy Layne Matthews have claimed that the fight between Shangela and Mimi directly caused the break. However, Raja has recalled that RuPaul got sick at the time, prompting the entire production to go on hiatus for a few weeks.
9 Manila Wasn't Allowed To Wear A Dress On All Stars 4
During the "Curves & Swerves" runway challenge on All Stars 4, Manila Luzon had planned to wear a dress that resembled a tampon with blood on it. However, according to Manila, the production team told her that the dress was in "bad taste" and forced the queen to wear something else.
Most times, Drag Race contestants have had runway looks blocked from production because the clothes include trademarked logos or symbols. However, the blocking of Manila Luzon's "tampon dress" was certainly a rare instance where the producers found the look to be inappropriate and consequently forced the queen to wear something else instead.
8 The Show Recorded A Tie For Season 6 And All Stars 3
There have been a few times when Drag Race recorded a tie between two finalists. Contestants have gone on record to say that a tie between Bianca Del Rio and Adore Delano was filmed on Drag Race season 6 and that a tie between Trixie Mattel and Kennedy Davenport was also shot during All Stars 3.
With that said, the production team never filmed a tie between Trinity The Tuck and Monet X Change on All Stars 4, which is the only instance when a tie indeed took place on RuPaul's Drag Race.
7 Willam's Disqualification Story Was A Lie
On Drag Race season 4, fans watched Willam being disqualified for "breaking the rules." Some clarification was provided during the reunion/finale, where Willam claimed that she received conjugal visits from her husband while filming the season - something that is not allowed for contestants who are supposed to be in sequester.
However, years later, Willam has opened up a few times about the fact that the story she told during the reunion/finale was fabricated by the Drag Race production team. The truth is much more complicated and involves Willam allegedly sleeping with producers.
6 Pearl's Behind-The-Scenes Standoff With RuPaul
The fans watched RuPaul and Pearl dramatically staring at each other on Drag Race season 7, prompting the contestant to ask the host if she had something on her face. However, according to Pearl, the situation was much deeper than just that little interaction.
During one particular Hey Qween interview, Pearl recalled an interaction that she had with RuPaul while filming Drag Race. Pearl stated the following: "The camera went down for a moment, and I turned to RuPaul and said, 'Oh my god, I just want to say thank you so much. It's such an honor to be here and such a pleasure to be here.'" Then, according to Pearl, RuPaul replied with, "Nothing you say matters unless that camera is rolling."
5 Sasha Velour Had A Plan For Each Finale Lip Sync
The format of a Drag Race finale changed completely on season 9 when the finalists were asked to compete for the crown in a series of lip syncs. During that episode, Sasha Velour had the famous rose petals reveal on the lip sync against Shea Coulee - leaving many fans wondering how she would've pulled that off if they had been assigned a different song.
Sasha Velour revealed that she had a plan for each of the songs that they were given to lip-sync that night. This is what Sasha has said about the possibility of lip-syncing to "Stronger" by Britney Spears: "I had scissors strapped to my thigh and I was going to cut the wig until I was bald - to be stronger as a bald queen at the end."
4 The Show Had A Completely Different Original Concept
Drag Race season 1 contestant Shannel has revealed that, originally, the show was going to be about drag queens and designers competing together throughout the season.
During an interview with Hey Qween, Shannel stated that the production team suddenly changed the format of the series right before filming started. All in all, Shannel believes that the entire first season was a process of figuring out what the show would become in the long run.
3 Producers Didn't Know What To Do On All Stars 1
According to several of the contestants who competed on All Stars 1, it was clear to everyone on set that producers weren't sure of what the spin-off's format would be. In fact, many of the queens claim that the infamous idea of putting them up in pairs was a rushed decision.
In hindsight, many fans credit the pairing up of the queens as the ultimate reason why All Stars 1 wasn't as successful as its subsequent seasons. Nonetheless, it is still one of the most remembered twists in the history of the franchise.
2 Katya Didn't Mean To Be Shady To Alaska On All Stars 2
On All Stars 2, fans watched Alaska completely crumble emotionally upon landing in the bottom on the episode right before the finale. During that moment, Alaska pled her case to Katya, who responded to the whole interaction with a simple "Party."
This was perceived by many as an extremely shady interaction from Katya to Alaska as if the queen was not being understanding of Alaska's emotions. However, Katya has gone on record to say that the interaction was edited that way, but that her response to Alaska wasn't shady or dismissive in any way.
1 No One Can Talk About Something That Happened On The Season 11 Reunion
According to Ariel Versace, something happened during the Drag Race season 11 reunion that no one can talk about.
In an interview with Hey Qween, Ariel Versace talked about trying to explain the wig situation between her and Plastique Tiara. Then, Ariel said, "Something happened that interrupted it that I can't really talk about. Another cast member decided to jump in and really flip the script on what we were talking about, and Ru got pissed about it."
