American Horror Story: Each Season's Best-Dressed Character

Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story is an exercise in terror, melodrama, and style. The series features beautiful, glamorous characters who find themselves in unsavory situations, situations involving murder, mayhem, and the supernatural. Spanning decades and horror subgenres, each of American Horror Story's nine seasons (so far) relies heavily upon memorable costumes and fashion choices for its characters.

Picking the best-dressed character from each ensemble season of American Horror Story is no easy task, especially considering how many fashionable and dashing faces grace the screen. That being said, some clear winners do stand out, from Elsa Mars's aquamarine suit in Freak Show to Michael Langdon's prophetic duds in Apocalypse.

9 Murder House: Constance Langdon

The sultry and classy Jessica Lange plays Constance Langdon in Murder House, the Harmon family's neighbor whose life is marred by tragedy, deceit, and jealously. Despite her circumstances and evil nature, Constance dons bright dresses, loose curls, and perfectly manicured fingernails.

The Virginia native moved to Los Angeles to become a star. Instead, she got pregnant, killed her husband, and later became the grandmother of the Antichrist. Talk about insane character development.

8 Asylum: Lana Winters

In Asylum, Sarah Paulson plays journalist Lana Winters, who goes through quite an ordeal when she's institutionalized at Briarcliff against her will while investigating a serial killer known as Bloody Face. When she isn't ordered to wear a patient's garb, Lana's look speaks to the heights of '60s and '70s couture.

Lana's best look comes toward the end of the season, when she returns to Briarcliff to film a documentary. She struts around in an oversized fur coat and sunglasses, a survivor.

7 Coven: Marie Laveau

While witches Fiona Goode and her daughter Cordelia know how to dress, they are outshined by the powerful voodoo priestess Marie Laveau in Coven. Angela Bassett plays Laveau, who wages war against the white witches of New Orleans and beyond because of their complicity in racialized violence.

Based on a well-known, real-life practitioner of voodoo, Laveau looks magnificent and powerful no matter the century. Whether in her Antebellum garb or skin-tight, cheetah print jumper, Laveau always steals the stage – a hard feat in a season known for its glamour.

6 Freak Show: Elsa Mars

Lange wins again as Elsa Mars in Freak Show, the manager of the traveling circus moving through Florida during the season's run. Elsa dresses like a star of Silent Era cinema, wearing the most delicate and feminine clothing that compliments her curly bob haircut.

Elsa also likes to play with her femininity, and her most iconic outfit of the season comes when she performs in an aquamarine suit. Elsa subverts gender roles by matching the suit with heels and bright red lipstick.

5 Hotel: The Countess

It's hard to look better than Lady Gaga, even with all the dazzling performers around her in Hotel. Her vampiric character The Countess definitely wins the award for most glam, thanks in large part to her glittery, sequined murder glove.

As the owner of the Hotel Cortez, a vintage Los Angeles retreat, The Countess keeps her appearance impeccable. '80s ballroom dresses, white power suits, and that milk white skin tone brings The Countess's look together.

4 Roanoke: Shelby Miller

Lily Rabe and Sarah Paulson both play Shelby Miller, the protagonist of Roanoke and it's series within a series, My Roanoke Nightmare. Shelby has a simple, approachable look, which matches her character's journey perfectly.

As both the real and the fake Shelby dig deeper into the haunted house mystery at the heart of the season, she keeps it plain, yet elegant with jeans, overalls, and casual button-ups. The other characters around Shelby don similar attire, but she pulls it off the best.

3 Cult: Winter Anderson

Billie Lourd plays Winter Anderson, the sister of cult leader Kai Anderson, in American Horror Story's seventh season. Winter manages to get a job babysitting for the Mayfair-Richards, which gives her brother access into their lives.

With her austere, macabre fashion style, Winter stands out. Between her lilac gray hair, baby doll dresses, and cameo necklaces, Winter kills it with her Wednesday Addams look.

2 Apocalypse: Michael Langdon

Who else but the Antichrist himself could win best dressed for the Apocalypse season? As the instigator of the end times, Cody Fern's character Michael Langdon must toe the line between demonic entity and charismatic dissenter.

From a short-haired warlock to the long-haired ruler of the world, Michael makes his force known through his black suits. He often adds hints of red through scarves, eye shadow, and real blood.

1 1984: Nurse Rita/Donna Chambers

Angelica Ross, who also stars in Ryan Murphy's series Pose, plays the nurse at Camp Redwood, Rita, in 1984. Rita isn't who she seems, though; in fact, she's a psychologist obsessed with Mr. Jingles, the serial killer who committed mass murder at the camp in 1970.

Donna's many looks over the season's run pay tribute to the best in '80s fashions without going overboard like other characters around her. From cropped jackets to high-collar professional attire to flamboyant jewelry, Rita keeps it both tasteful and contemporary.
