It takes a unique series to be known as much for its comedy as it is for its fear factor. Fargo’s trademark style is to bring stories and visual direction that points toward a special kind of violence. To this end, the series has brought genuinely scary scenes that last long in the memory.
These have shown in both the film and the TV show, with varying degrees of brutality and bloodshed on display. On some occasions, it’s only the implications and the way words cut into a scene that make everything absolutely bone-chilling. It’s worth checking these out as the fourth season of Fargo arrives.
10 Gaear Disposing Of Carl's Body
In what was one of the worst decisions by a main character, Carl Showalter tried to intimidate his associate Gaear Grimsrud into giving up their car. In retaliation, Gaear chased Carl down and murdered him with an axe.
The scary thing about this all was the cold manner with which Gaear handled himself. He’d only moments earlier beat Jean Lundegaard to death just for shrieking, before watching TV with her corpse still by side. Even eerier was how he then took Carl’s body and started to feed it into a woodchipper to crush it into pulp.
9 Yuri Seeing His Fate
One of the best episodes of Fargo is where Yuri tried to kill Nikki and Mr. Wrench. After being fatally wounded, Yuri found himself in limbo in what appeared as a bowling alley. Here, he was told he had to face his sins.
The next moment, Yuri saw the faces of hundreds of slain jews who had died due to Yuri’s ancestors. He’d taken pride in this fact the whole season, and this moment confirmed that he would most definitely be tortured in Hell for his crimes.
8 Malvo's Intimidation of Gus Grimly
One of the reasons why Fargo the TV series might trump the film is because of the subtle manner of storytelling. This scene had no violence, yet had the effect of making a person’s nightmare take shape and form. Here, Lorne Malvo was pulled over speeding -- he’d earlier killed the police chief.
The innocent Gus was taken aback when Malvo, giving him a death stare, asked Gus if he wanted to engage him and possibly lose his life. He then gave Gus a choice to let him go or face the consequences. The calm but terrifying manner with which Malvo intimidated Gus was enough to scare the daylights out of anyone. Understandably, Gus did let him go.
7 Diner Massacre
Rye Gerhardt was clearly not one of the most intelligent Fargo villains. After failing to extort a judge into giving in to his demands, Gerhardt took to killing her, as well as the employees of the diner. The uneasy aspect of this scene was how realistic it came across.
The bloodshed wasn’t like a usual TV series seems, instead making one queasy and uncomfortable by the violence on display. The sight of the waitress limping out the diner helplessly and leaving a trail of blood is about as real as it can seem.
6 Jean Lundegaard's Kidnapping
Due to the Coens’ talent, the directors managed to make this both a funny and chilling scene. If you want to know what a real kidnapping is like, then here’s the best example. The scene is disturbing and shows off Carl and Gaear’s cruelty as they manhandle Jean.
It’s far from a pretty sight, with Jean thrown across, beaten, and left in hysterics. The house is left upside down, as the criminals break everything in their path to make off with the poor woman whose fate turned out to be even more gruesome.
5 Lorne Malvo's Elevator Assassination
While Lorne Malvo’s catchphrase of “Aces!” is certainly funny, the preceding moment to it is hard to watch. In this scene, Lester Nygaard confronted Malvo -- who was pretending to be a dentist -- to acknowledge him, in an elevator with Malvo’s fiance and friends.
Finding Lester’s insistence amusing, Malvo asked the former if he was serious. Upon his confirmation, Malvo took out his gun and shot each of the other three in the head. It’s quite a sight to have the assassin kill these people so casually, whose brains were splattered on the walls after they’d screamed in vain.
4 Forest Skirmish
This doubled as a fight scene and something out of a horror-thriller. Here, Nicki and Mr. Wrench were ambushed by Yuri and his associate Golem, who chased the duo into the forest. In the woods, Nicki and Wrench were stalked and hunted, with their attackers shooting arrows at them from the shadows.
However, the two managed to turn the tables, but in very gruesome ways. With Golem, the duo used their handcuffs and outright decapitated the man. Wrench also threw an ax that fatally wounded Yuri. It’s an extremely bloody mess of a scene that requires a real stomach to watch.
3 Malvo And Lou Solverson's Conversation
Lorne Malvo’s ambiguity is what made him such an interesting villain, that fans wouldn’t mind seeing again. This conversation with Lou Solverson was filled with tension, to the point where you’d think either man might throttle the other.
As it happened, Malvo wanted the whereabouts of Lester. Knowing something was off about Malvo, Lou didn’t oblige, leading to the two trading stories about their worst experiences. Here, Malvo made things even scarier by going so far as to claim he was the devil in human form. An idea that certainly holds up considering all the devilish things Malvo did in the series.
2 Dodd Gerhardt Attacking The Blumquists
Dodd easily falls in the negative pile when considering the Fargo characters fans either hate or love. In this scene, he was able to escape his bindings put upon him by Peggy and Ed Blumquist and had blood on his mind.
In a display of brutality, Dodd wrapped a rope around Ed’s throat and strung him up the ceiling, finding humor in watching the latter slowly choke. The scene got more brutal when Peggy stabbed Dodd in the foot, making this a no-holds-barred fight that saw both parties reach into their most visceral thoughts to end the other.
1 Nikki Assaulted By Yuri
It takes a special kind of evil man to harm a woman, and Yuri certainly qualified. Believing Sy to be colluding with Nikki against V.M. Varga, Yuri and Meemo looked to make an example out of her. To this end, they started beating her up.
It didn’t stop there, as the men attacked Nikki within an inch of her life. The scary thing about this scene was that the bulk of the abuse isn’t seen, making the viewer listen to her screams as the men are heard absolutely destroying her. The fact that the audience is made to paint the picture from Nikki’s cries of pain is what makes this a scene where you can’t help but shudder.
