42, the Jackie Robinson biopic that starred the late Chadwick Boseman, is being re-released in AMC theaters to honor the actor's career. Boseman passed away on August 28, 2020, at the age of 43, after a four-year battle with colon cancer. An incredibly dynamic actor, Boseman captivated audiences in several blockbuster films over the last decade, including Marvels' Black Panther and Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods. In 42, which was originally released in 2013, Boseman played the boundary-breaking baseball player Jackie Robinson.
As a tribute to Boseman, 42 will be re-released in AMC theaters across the United States. According to Variety, AMC conducted social media polls to determine which Boseman movie fans would most like to see in theaters again—other than Black Panther—and his performance as Robinson was the clear winner. The film will be shown in almost every AMC theater, which includes more than 300 locations throughout the country. Tickets are available at a reduced $5 rate starting September 1.
Many of Boseman's friends and colleagues have shared stories of their love and admiration for the actor. MCU cast and crew showed an outpouring of support, from Robert Downey Jr. calling Black Panther the "crowning achievement" of the MCU, to the film's director, Ryan Coogler, saying that Boseman lived "a beautiful life." Spike Lee simply shared a selection of scenes from Da 5 Bloods on Instagram. Boseman's 42 co-star, Harrison Ford, also paid tribute in a powerful statement, sharing that Boseman was "as much of a hero as any he played."
Re-releasing 42 in theaters is one more opportunity for fans to appreciate Boseman's unparalleled screen presence. He was an inspiration to many through both the roles he played and his real-life heroics. With the safety of movie theaters still in question, though, hopefully, streaming services will make Boseman's films available so that even more viewers can witness his brilliance.
