Patrick Mills, senior quest designer for Cyberpunk 2077, says that the game's main campaign will be shorter than that of CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The Witcher 3 was known for its vast, rich open world, full of sidequests and grand discoveries to make. In addition to its wealth of side content, the RPG featured over 50 hours of main story content.
Cyberpunk 2077 certainly has big shoes to fill if it wants to live up to the legacy of The Witcher 3. Prospective fans have been watching its lengthy development process closely to see how the game shapes up, and so far, CD Projekt Red seems committed to filling Night City with plenty to do. Even the dialogue system will be rich with details; players will have to keep an eye on their surroundings while talking to NPCs in order to get an edge on a combat scenario that could flare up at a moment's notice.
But there's one area where Cyberpunk 2077 might not be equal to The Witcher 3. As The Gamer reports, senior quest designer Patrick Mills told fans on Twitter to expect a shorter story campaign from Cyberpunk 2077. According to Mills, this was a conscious decision, spurred by complaints the developer received about The Witcher 3's storyline being too long. Metrics showed that while a lot of people played the fantasy RPG, not a lot of people actually finished it. Mills stressed that CD Projekt Red wants players to see the whole story in Cyberpunk 2077.
Finding the right amount of story content for an open world game is never easy. One great thing about open-world games is how they give players the chance to go their own way and choose their own path. Tying them to a chain of story missions may run counter to this goal, but at the same time, without a major story to tie everything together, the game can start to feel inconsequential. Breath of the Wild struck a good balance between story content and side content by letting players go at their own pace and tackle major story beats in whatever order they wished. It's one of the many reasons the game was so treasured. But not every open world game can manage such masterful design.
Cyberpunk 2077 certainly looks on track to nail its open world aspects. What CD Projekt Red has revealed of Night City so far looks stupendous and rich, and the developer clearly has some strong ideas for the story content as well. The recently revealed lifepath system gives players multiple ways to experience the main story, and the game has already been confirmed to have multiple endings. Hopefully, the developer can manage a reasonable length for Cyberpunk 2077's campaign and let players enjoy the game to the fullest.
