According to recent rumors, Square Enix neglected to show off Final Fantasy XVI during the PlayStation 5 event in June because it wanted to focus on more visually impressive games like Project Athia. Sony's next generation console represents a substantial leap forward in graphic quality and processing power, and will support potent new features like ray tracing for better visual fidelity.
Sony has been understandably eager to sell its new console, but the process has not been without difficulty. The presence of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a detrimental effect on the entire games industry, and without popular trade shows like E3 to showcase the new tech, both Sony and its competitor Microsoft have struggled to get fans the information they need. To this day, fans don't know the price of the PlayStation 5, though this will hopefully change during a livestream event set to take place tomorrow. There have been other obstacles as well; rumors have spread recently that production of PlayStation 5 consoles had to be decreased dramatically, though Sony has since denied this rumor.
A lot of decisions go into every aspect of a new console's development, including which games to show at which events. According to recent speculation from a VG247 editor, reported by Wccftech, Square Enix made one such decision during the PS5 reveal back in June. The developer announced a brand new title named Project Athia but neglected to share any news about Final Fantasy XVI. The preceding main series Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy XV, released back in 2016, and fans of the long-running RPG series are understandably anxious to find out what's coming next. But according to this rumor, Square Enix made a conscious choice not to share any Final Fantasy news. This rumor claims that the next game will be released on a "tried-and-true" engine, possibly something like Unreal Engine 4. Square Enix wanted to share Project Athia instead because it was designed expressly to take advantage of the powerful new tech offered by the PlayStation 5.
The Final Fantasy franchise has certainly not been dormant since the release of Final Fantasy XV. Final Fantasy XIV, currently one of the most played MMORPGs in the world, is still seeing constant updates to keep players involved and invested. More significantly, the recent release of Final Fantasy VII Remake turned a lot of heads and earned rave reviews; Screen Rant is just one of many publications taken with the recent remake. But remakes and MMORPG updates are a far cry from a brand new mainline RPG, and fans are understandably getting antsy.
This is of course just speculation, and as such should be taken with plenty of salt. Assuming Square Enix does have a new Final Fantasy game in the works, there could be any number of reasons why it wasn't shown in June. Still, if the rumors are true, it seems possible that the game might be revealed during this week's PlayStation event on the 16th. A swiftly deleted tweet from the Final Fantasy brand manager might just confirm this. Time will tell how accurate the speculation is, but hopefully impatient fans won't have to wait too much longer for news about Final Fantasy 16.
