Skull Kid Returns As DLC In Zelda Spin-Off Cadence Of Hyrule

Skull Kid is emerging from the era of Nintendo 64 in the new campaign DLC for Cadence of Hyrule. A unique indie collaboration between Nintendo and Crypt of the NecroDancer developer Brace Yourself Games, Cadence of Hyrule is a short but sweet roguelike adventure that mixes the rhythm mechanics of NecroDancer with the look and feel of the The Legend of Zelda. Nintendo has been opening the door to collaborations with its iconic franchises lately, including a Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild musou prequel from Koei Tecmo.

Released in June of last year, Cadence of Hyrule had support in the form of a few free DLC packs late in 2019. Nintendo surprised many this past July with the announcement of paid DLC about a year after its initial debut. The season pass includes three packs, all of which have since released. The first contains five new playable characters, a mixture of heroes from The Legend of Zelda and Crypt of the NecroDancer. Each new character has their own moves and attacks, adding replayability to the campaign. The second DLC adds new music tracks to the game from artists Jules "FamilyJules" Conroy, Alex "A_Rival" Esquivel, and Chipzel.

The third DLC pack, Symphony of the Mask, features a new playable character - Skull Kid from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - as well as a new story campaign centered around his move set. Nintendo of America announced today that the DLC is available now. As is appropriate for the character, Skull Kid can don different masks to gain new abilities, including a few that fans of Majora's Mask will definitely recognize. The narrative DLC adds all manner of other features, including new tilesets, dungeons, enemies, and traps.

Symphony of the Mask releases today for $10 standalone or $15 in the season pass. That pass also includes the other two DLC packs, which are priced at $6 each separately. For those who haven't yet played any of Cadence of Hyrule, a new physical edition of the game is coming to stores. The Switch cartridge includes the full package from the main game and all the DLC. Retailing for $40, that edition of the game is available in about a month, on October 23rd.

Nintendo's willingness to give the reins over to Brace Yourself Games for Cadence of Hyrule is an encouraging notion. It's no secret that Nintendo is a rather secretive game publisher, and giving access to one of its most popular franchises is quite the show of faith. Given the success of Cadence of Hyrule, it may not be out of the question that developers like Yacht Club Games or WayForward could follow it up with something from another of Nintendo's games. Maybe a new entry in a classic racing franchise headlined by a Captain who loves Falcons. Maybe.
