Star Wars: Why Stormtroopers Really Have Bad Aim | Screen Rant

Stormtroopers have always had bad aim in the Star Wars saga, and Star Wars Rebels provided a reason for that. George Lucas' original Star Wars movie propped up the Imperial stormtroopers as being an elite fighting force, having superior accuracy to Tusken Raiders with their blasters - but that was anything but true, despite what Obi-Wan Kenobi told Luke Skywalker. Even in A New Hope fans could see that stormtroopers had terrible aim when they were aboard the Tantive IV and Death Star.

Over the years, stormtroopers and their accuracy - or really, a lack thereof - have led to constant jokes and memes from Star Wars fans. Stormtroopers as a whole are easily defeated by the heroes of whatever movie or TV show people are watching, but some versions, such as death troopers and even the Final Order's Sith troopers, can be classified as special forces; those subgroups certainly do have better blaster aim than normal stromtroopers, but they weren't the stormtroopers Obi-Wan was referring to in A New Hope.

The reason why stormtroopers have bad aim was hinted at in Star Wars Rebels season 2, episode 9, " Stealth Strike", when the Jedi Kanan Jarrus and clone trooper Captain Rex disguised themselves as stormtroopers to rescue their fellow Rebels. While in a standoff with actual stormtroopers, Kanan said to Rex, "Wow. You really do shoot like a stormtrooper," because Rex kept missing his targets. Rex responded by yelling, "It's this helmet. I can't see!" He then took off the helmet, chucked it at the opposing stormtroopers, and then immediately began hitting every one of his shots with perfect accuracy. Part of that could be because he was a high-ranking clone trooper, but another part is because the helmet was obstructing his view.

Star Wars Rebels wasn't the first property to make fun of stormtroopers and their armor. Luke made a similar statement in A New Hope when he disguised himself as a stormtrooper, saying that he couldn't see a thing in the armor. But in this particular case, Rex tried shooting his blaster with the helmet on and couldn't hit anyone; the moment he took off the helmet, he had near perfect accuracy, thus proving that it's always been the stormtroopers' armor/helmets that make them worse than they should be. That's not to say stormtroopers aren't terrible without the armor, but they could be at least somewhat better than normal.

Funnily enough, The Mandalorian season 1 pointed out that stormtroopers had bad aim and was a notorious fact throughout the galaxy, so much so that even bounty hunters would joke about them. The First Order's stormtroopers were better in some regards, but they weren't perfect either. No matter what form of stormtrooper the Star Wars galaxy throws out, they can never be as good as the clone troopers were during the age of the Republic.
