Warning: SPOILERS for The Boys Season 2, Episode 5
Season 2 of The Boys can make A-Train a real hero by having him turn against Vought and The Seven. The second season of Amazon Prime Video's hit series is already rapidly approaching its finale. Through the first five episodes of The Boys season 2, the next fight between The Boys and The Seven has continued to be set up with the state of each team continuing to change. But, there are new motivations already introduced for the inevitable confrontation, with Stormfront killing Kimiko's brother.
One of the characters who has had a tough time in season 2 is A-Train. The speedster had a big role in the first season of The Boys, as it was his recklessness that kicked the show's story into motion. He accidentally killed Hughie Campbell's girlfriend and the coverup by Vought is what led Hughie to team-up with Billy Butcher and the rest of The Boys. A-Train's storyline then evolved as his excessive use of Compound V was explored and he eventually had to kill his super-powered girlfriend Popclaw. But, it was the very end of season one that put A-Train in the position viewers found him in when season 2 begins.
A-Train's uncertain future as a superhero has been a key part of his story in season 2. The season one finale saw A-Train have a heart attack during his fight with Starlight, which was the result of his continued use of extra Compound V to boost his powers. He did recover and make it back to The Seven early on in season 2, but his return to heroic duties didn't go as planned. A-Train might not be in the hospital anymore, but it became obvious that he was not fully recovered. His diminishing value with The Seven and treatment by Vought could see him become a real hero by the end of season 2 by turning on them.
The drive behind A-Train's turn on The Seven and Vought could stem from his recent removal from the team. Homelander made the decision to kick A-Train out of The Seven due to his deteriorating health and speed. As Homelander put it, A-Train might not even be one of the 20 fastest people on the planet anymore, so having him represent the best of the best with a spot on The Seven is an embarrassment. Unsurprisingly, A-Train was upset to learn that he was losing his spot with The Seven.
A-Train loves the fame and money that comes with being part of The Seven, so that is part of the reason why he is so angry with the idea of leaving. He even attempted to make his exit happen more on his terms by requesting rewrites to the Dawn of the Seven movie, which ends with A-Train announcing he's walking away from the team. Even though A-Train is free of The Seven, Vought still has plans for him to get a big send-off and star in his own TV show, but the anger that he feels over this decision could mean that he won't play along with these plans any longer.
A-Train's lack of loyalty to Vought and The Seven can already be seen by how he handled his firing. If he really wanted to position himself to stay with the team, he could've offered up his knowledge that Starlight was responsible for the Compound V leak to the public. Instead of acting out, A-Train could've shown his loyalty to Vought by giving them this information in exchange for an extended stay on The Seven or a better exit strategy. His decision to keep Starlight's secret shows that he doesn't have Vought's best interests at heart, so now he could look to take them down. After all, Starlight will soon learn about A-Train's exit from the team if she hasn't already, and knowing that he didn't rat her out could go a long way. Perhaps A-Train's redemption will come in tandem with a team-up with The Boys and Starlight.
Getting fired from The Seven is likely all the motivation A-Train would need to turn on Vought, but episode 5 also might have given him an extra reason to bring them down. Near the end of the episode, Stormfront and A-Train have a quick chat on the set of Dawn of the Seven and it doesn't take long for A-Train to pick up on Stormfront's racism. As the only member of The Seven who was a person of color, A-Train takes even more offense with her attitude. With this knowledge, A-Train will walk away from The Seven at a time when a racist is ascending to power. Taking down Vought and The Seven would be worthwhile on their own, but knowing that he can bring down Stormfront too could help make the decision to turn on them even easier for A-Train.
The possibility for A-Train's redemption in season 2 would also be a great way to continue his overall character arc. Despite the arrogance that he has routinely displayed, A-Train is a tragic figure in The Boys. His quest to become more famous and earn more money has repeatedly led him to make terrible decisions. It was his involvement with Compound V shipments that to him killing Robin, and eventually led Homelander to tell him to kill Popclaw too. Meanwhile, his desire to be the fastest man on the planet by any means necessary is what drove A-Train to take more Compound V, which leads to his health problems and eventually losing his spot on The Seven.
A-Train was able to push past most of the regret he should've felt by focusing on his money and fame, but now that the spotlight is starting to go away, he could soon realize that he needs to make up for what he has done. Taking down the institution that has controlled his life for so many years and has now wronged him personally could be a way to rectify his past. What A-Train actually does to potentially take down The Seven remains to be seen, but working with The Boys and eventually fighting Stormfront could very well be in his future. Now, whether or not any of that happens will depend on how the rest of The Boys season 2 plays out.
