The Walking Dead: Will Everyone Other Than Carol & Daryl Die?

Does The Walking Dead's confirmed Daryl and Carol spin-off spell doom for everyone else in the main series? As one virus continues to wreak havoc, another is coming to an end - The Walking Dead will officially wrap up with season 11. Debuting on AMC in 2010, The Walking Dead rapidly became a global sensation, breathing new life into the zombie sub-genre with a cold, modern sheen, strong focus on character drama, and high-production values. After dominating cable television for a full decade, The Walking Dead is currently in its tenth season, which has been delayed and extended due to the real-world pandemic. Season 11 will air in 2022 and bring The Walking Dead to a conclusion, finishing in roughly the same place as the original comic series.

However, The Walking Dead fans needn't worry about leaving the zombie apocalypse behind just yet. The Walking Dead's final 2 seasons will be accompanied by a pair of spin-offs in Fear The Walking Dead and World Beyond, with a movie starring Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes likely arriving during that period also. Then, in 2023, the Walking Dead franchise will continue with its third spin-off venture, starring series originals Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride). But while the new spin-off has generated both relief and excitement among fans, the announcement doesn't necessarily bode well for the rest of The Walking Dead's cast.

If Daryl and Carol are splintering from the main group to embark on their own adventure, something must happen to separate these long-serving characters from their fellow survivors. The reason could be entirely innocuous, such as being sent on a mission. Perhaps Alexandria make radio contact with a faraway community, and the Dixon-Peletier tandem are sent to investigate, or news reaches Alexandria of a potential virus cure, meaning someone needs to go out and ascertain whether the rumors are true. It's also vital to consider Daryl and Carol's personality traits, as both characters have voluntarily spent time away from their peers. Daryl moved into the wild after Rick's "death," living alone with his pet dog, and Carol once settled in a small cabin outside of The Kingdom, reluctantly accepting visits from Morgan and Ezekiel. It's possible that the final episodes of The Walking Dead see Daryl and Carol choose to be alone, away from communities and civilization.

Unfortunately, none of these options feel like definitive endings to The Walking Dead. To have Daryl and Carol strike out on their own goes against the spirit of togetherness and cooperation at the heart of The Walking Dead, but sending the duo on a mission would essentially make the new project The Walking Dead season 12 under a new name. With this in mind, maybe the duo's decision to leave isn't a choice, but forced upon them by tragedy. One possible reason for the spin-off (and arguably the most likely) is that Daryl and Carol are the only members of The Walking Dead's main cast to survive, with the rest killed by either the undead, or a powerful new enemy. Certainly, this would be an incredibly depressing end to The Walking Dead, but the series has earned an enduring reputation for its ruthlessness, so a blood-filled finale isn't out of the question.

This is a far cry from The Walking Dead's comic book ending, which finished with an older Carl Grimes living happily alongside his wife and daughter in a more or less zombie-free community, rapidly expanding across the U.S. But the Walking Dead TV series has already killed off Carl, while Rick and Michonne are safe elsewhere. If Daryl and Carol are protected from the ax, the only major casualty of such a dark ending would be Maggie. Negan has a grisly death coming, Ezekiel is already gravely ill, Judith was killed in the comic book series, and the remaining cast are supporting figures who joined later in the series, making a finale where almost everyone dies distinctly possible. AMC's The Walking Dead also has the CRM, which didn't exist in the comics. This mysterious new group could be the difference between the cause of the bloodbath, wiping out Alexandria and sending Daryl and Carol on a quest for vengeance.
