X-Men's Apocalypse Teases The Next Evolution of Mutantkind

The X-Men's Apocalypse is teasing the next evolution of the mutant race. The entire mutant race has gathered on the living island of Krakoa, and an amnesty has been granted that has given every mutant a clean criminal world. Everyone is welcome on Krakoa - whether they be an X-Man or a former member of the Brotherhood. Apocalypse actually sits upon the island's ruling "Quiet Council."

For all Apocalypse claims he is acting with mutantkind's best interests at heart, in truth he has an agenda of his own. Apocalypse may not be the first mutant he considers himself to be, but he is an ancient being nonetheless, and he has historic ties to Krakoa that run back millennia. Thousands of years ago, he and his First Horsemen repelled a monstrous invasion on Krakoa. They triumphed, but at a cost; Apocalypse was forced to banish Krakoa's twin Arakko to another plane of reality, with his First Horsemen transported there too to forever battle against the demonic hordes. Apocalypse regrets that action, and he is attempting to undo it. That looks set to lead directly into the upcoming "X of Swords" crossover, in which the forces of Arakko and the First Horsemen will return.

Comic-Watch has just published an exclusive preview to the upcoming Excalibur #12, by writer Tini Howard and with art by Marcus To and Erick Arciniega. It's a direct preview to "X of Swords," and it sees Apocalypse gather the Externals - fellow immortal mutants - at the Eternal Caldera on Krakoa. The preview cuts out before revealing why Apocalypse has called this meeting, but the location is significant; it appears to be the very place Apocalypse fought against demonic creatures all those thousands of years ago.

Apocalypse has previously settled for being cryptic, but here he is finally speaking to those even he would acknowledge as his peers. As such, he reveals that whatever he has planned, he doesn't just view it as the opportunity to restore his First Horsemen; rather, he believes he is unlocking the next stage of the evolution of the mutant race. It's reasonable to assume Apocalypse has gathered the Externals, who he previously described as his first coven, to perform some sort of ritual in order to achieve this. If so, this will most likely be the incident that triggers "X of Swords."

Tini Howard's Excalibur has consistently been one of the best X-Men books in Jonathan Hickman's relaunch, and this looks set to be an unmissable issue. "X of Swords" will dominate the X-Men line for the next few months, an event that spans over 24 issues, and this prelude should be essential reading to understand it.
