In 2020, the mistreatment of Black people in every walk of life has been drawn in sharper relief, particularly in the US. The murder of George Floyd and subsequent Black Live Matter protests have illuminated how pervasive and insidious racial injustice is in society. This momentous social movement has caused many to reexamine their biases and behaviors, and this is as true in the video game industry as it is in any other. Several video game companies have been taking steps to address and resolve racist tendencies. The recent addition of football player turned racial justice activist Colin Kaepernick to the roster of Madden NFL 21 can be viewed as at least tacit support for Black Lives Matter - a cause he champions - though developer EA hasn't been particularly forthcoming about its reasons.
In an atmosphere like today's, the Black In Gaming Awards will be a particularly significant event. The award recipients were announced recently in a press release, and they include some pretty big names. Reggie Fils-Aimé, who's already been recognized for his legacy at the New York Game Awards, will be receiving the show's prestigious Legacy Award for his work with Nintendo of America, while Chris Judge, the voice behind God of War's iconic player character Kratos, will win the award for Excellence in Performance. Other award-winners include Sarah Bond, vice president of global gaming partnerships and development at Xbox, and Mike Pondsmith, whose legendary tabletop RPG Cyberpunk serves as the basis for CD Projekt's hotly anticipated action RPG Cyberpunk 2077. For his long-running tabletop work, Pondsmith will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Video game fans who want to see these powerful figures recognized for their contributions to gaming can tune in to the awards show on September 12th. And of course, every Nintendo fan remembers Reggie Fils-Aimé, whose work at Nintendo transformed the company's outreach and led him to become a powerful presence, almost as recognizable as Shigeru Miyamoto himself. Both of these figures deserve recognition, just like each and every one of the 13 people set to receive an award this Saturday. With such a confluence of talent and legacy, the Black In Gaming Awards should make for a premier event.
