By today's flagship smartphone standards, Samsung's new Galaxy S20 FE is a more budget-minded alternative that still maintains some solid features. However, the way in which this new phone is purchased can have a significant effect on just how much someone ends up paying. Here's an explanation on the varying pricing of the Galaxy S20 FE.
The Galaxy S20 FE is Samsung's answer for those that don't want to spend considerably more on the Galaxy S20. The latter is a richer and feature-packed smartphone overall, but it costs $300 more than the similar Galaxy S20 FE. Of course, the carrier that Samsung's Fan Edition phone is bought through has a direct impact on the price difference between these two phones.
The S20 FE does make things simple by only offering one storage size (128GB), so potential buyers won't have to worry about differences in pricing, in that regard. However, Samsung's Galaxy S20 FE retails for $700 if one decides to buy it as an unlocked phone. In fact, purchases locked to AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular, all feature an identical $700 price tag, before diving into trade-ins and discount programs. However, if a buyer is purchasing a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE through Verizon, the price for this new phone jumps up to $750. It is also worth noting that purchasing a Galaxy S20 FE does come with four free months of YouTube Premium, as well as six free months of Spotify Premium. Combined, that's more than $100 in free streaming services.
For most potential buyers, the Samsung S20 FE represents a phone capable of providing similar performance as higher-priced phones, but without a few of the more premium bells and whistles. When compared to the $1,000 Galaxy S20, there really isn't that steep off a drop-off when opting for the cheaper model. Both phones start with the same 128GB of internal storage. Even though the Galaxy S20 series can expand to more than 1TB of storage, that initial storage should be more than enough for the average user. The more expensive Galaxy S20 features 12GB of RAM, compared to the 6GB included in the Galaxy S20 FE. This means the standard Galaxy S20 will be the more powerful and faster device, although the Galaxy S20 FE won't exactly be a slow phone.
The Galaxy S20 FE doesn't have all of the high-end camera features found in the standard model, but it does come with a setup spearheaded by a 12-megapixel main camera, along with a 32-megapixel up front. It also does have the same Scene Optimizer feature that intelligently adjusts the colors to make the shots taken look as good as possible. While the Galaxy S20 FE technically has a larger screen size (6.5-inch compared to 6.2-inch), the Fan Edition only offers a 1080p resolution whereas the regular Galaxy S20 hits 1440p.
In the end, the choice may come down to a matter of personal preference. If features like a superior camera, a more high-end display, or greater RAM are must-haves, then it might be worth the extra cost for a phone like the Galaxy S20. Otherwise, Samsung's Galaxy S20 FE offers compelling performance, at a comparatively more affordable cost.
