Godfall Can't Be Played Offline - Even When Playing Solo

The anticipated action-RPG Godfall is now confirmed to be always-online, even for those who plan to play the game solo. Godfall will be a PlayStation 5 launch title, and it will also be a 12-month exclusive for the Epic Games Store on PC.

Labelled as a "looter-slasher" by developer Counterplay Games and publisher Gearbox, Godfall has been in the public eye as one of the first next-gen titles for a while now. While the companies have emphasized that Godfall won't have microtransactions and won't be a live-service game, certain other questions have remained unanswered. Fans have been wondering whether or not the game will be playable offline, and the only response from Gearbox has been that Godfall is "still in development." Now, with just a matter of weeks left until the game releases, potential players finally have their answer.

The official PlayStation Store page for Godfall has confirmed that the game will require an internet connection to play. Alongside its preorder offers and release date, the listing shows an "Online Play Required" label in fine print. Underneath that, there's also a label saying "PS Plus Required for Online Play," which is a given but also a reminder of the ongoing state of primarily profit-driven online gaming.

Godfall will be one of several next-generation console games that will cost $70. The base game alone is $69.99, with the deluxe edition and "Ascended Edition" costing $89.99 and $99.99 on PS5, respectively. A 12-month PlayStation Plus subscription retails for $59.99, and that's the cheapest it gets. Of course, the PS5 console itself goes for either $499.99 or $399.99, depending on whether one wants the digital edition or not.

It's not entirely surprising that Godfall is an always-online experience; many other loot-based games can't be played offline because it could compromise their core economy of equipment. However, many potential PS5 buyers may not have a reliable way to connect to the internet, which was already a major point of contention at the dawn of the previous console generation. The financial barrier-to-entry is also undeniably huge if one is hoping to play Godfall on PS5 (assuming one can even get their hands on the console itself). On the other hand, PC players won't have to worry about paying more than $60 on the Epic Games Store to get total access on day one - even though Godfall won't come to Steam until next year at the earliest.
