Marvel's Avengers is adding sorely needed post-game content in the form of Tachyon Rifts. The live-service superhero game was released last month after a lengthy and controversial development cycle. A lot of developments frustrated and angered fans along the way, especially DLC character Spider-Man's exclusivity to PlayStation consoles. When the game finally did release, it was to mixed reviews. Critics enjoyed the combat but found the multiplayer lacking.
Unfortunately, the multiplayer doesn't seem to have improved after launch. The post-game content underwhelmed a lot of fans, which is unfortunate for a live-service game like this one. Player numbers have been plummeting, especially on PC thanks to bad matchmaking mechanics. As nice as the superhero power fantasy is, there's just nothing there to keep fans invested. In an effort to salvage these sinking player numbers, developers have already promised a wealth of new content coming soon to fix what is, in essence, a boring game.
A new patch is finally starting to deliver on that promise. The game's website lists the full patch notes to give players an idea of what to expect from the new content. The patch goes live today and introduces SHIELD Substation Zero Outpost, a new hub space that was set up by SHIELD to investigate temporal anomalies. These temporal anomalies play into the more significant update coming in the new patch: Tachyon Rift Missions. These late-game missions give players a crack at unlocking Cosmic Gear by sending them through temporal rifts. Heroes will take damage over time while they're in the Tachyon Storm but their Heroic energy will charge up faster. The missions are available once per day and rotate out daily.
In addition to this potent new late-game offering, the patch provides several bug fixes. Marvel's Avengers had a particularly buggy release, and Crystal Dynamics has been working very hard to squash all of them since the game came out. The new patch's bug report is still quite vast, addressing a number of problems like infinite loading screens, crashs, and enemies getting stuck behind walls. It's heartening to know that Crystal Dynamics is committed to improving the game, but the sheer amount of bugs that are still being addressed is rather daunting.
Crystal Dynamics put a lot of effort into this game, and it clearly has big plans for the future. DLC characters like Kate Bishop will surely help incentivize players to return to the foundering hero game, and post-game missions like the Tachyon Rift will finally give fans something to do until they arrive. Marvel's Avengers is in a pretty tough spot right now, but hopefully Crystal Dynamics can turn it around.
