Microsoft Flight Sim Player Adds Awesome Xbox Series X Easter Egg

A modder got sick of waiting for Microsoft Flight Simulator to appear on Xbox consoles, so he brought the Xbox Series X into the game. Microsoft's newest entry into its long-running Flight Simulator franchise may not be the first game one thinks of when it comes to mods, but the satellite-imaged world map of the massive game is ripe for opportunity. Players on PC could remake cities into configurations from the past or fix some of the imperfections that the procedural map generates from time to time. Or, they could add building-sized objects and turn the game from a chill flying sim to a surreal nightmare.

Other than adding nonsensical structures to the environment, Microsoft Flight Simulator players have been busy since the game launched this past August. The game is made for photo modes, with many players posting weather reports from far off locales in the form of in-game screenshots. Others are seeking out real-world objects that the game has decided to turn into buildings, buzzing attractions at theme parks, or seeking out the hidden mysteries of Area 51. This is all in addition to updates by the developers, one of which is planned to expand the coverage of the United States and add even more airports.

However, not even Area 51 can compare to the thrill of the upcoming next-generation of game consoles for some players. User Oh_Gaz on Reddit posted a video of their mod, which places a monolithic Xbox Series X on the campus of Microsoft's Washington HQ. The video shows a small plane drifting around the console, showing off accurate lettering on the back and the familiar green glow on the top vent. While not shown in the video, Oh_Gaz does confirm that players can try to land on the giant console, which is surely worth an Xbox Achievement if players can pull it off.

The modder also confirms that they're not just working on an Xbox mod, and the PlayStation 5 that's also in development is much easier to land on. Meanwhile, other commentators joked about the game finally getting its promised Xbox support. While Microsoft originally announced Microsoft Flight Simulator as a game that would launch on PC and Xbox, only the PC version has materialized so far. The game once shared this odd space with Gears Tactics, but Microsoft announced that the strategy game was coming to Xbox Series X as a launch title. Considering the high requirements to run the game on PC, it's likely that it will also launch primarily as an Xbox Series X exclusive if and when it does make the jump to the living room.

Between the mods players have started to develop and the bizarre machine-generated oddities they've found on the map, Microsoft Flight Simulator has proven to be a huge viral success for Microsoft and Xbox Game Pass. It's the type of game that isn't developed all that often in 2020, but it does show Microsoft's dedication to variety in their catalog. Even if players haven't seen the full breadth of their first-part plans as of yet, one might expect more niche games like Flight Simulator on Game Pass in the years to come.
