Tesla Model Y Gets A Range Boost With Latest Software Update

Tesla is rolling out a new software update to its vehicles, claiming to increase efficiency and boost the range of its existing Model Y mid-sized electric. This comes off the news of the auto manufacturer increasing the range of nearly all of the new vehicles in its fleet, thanks to new improvements to efficiency.

Tesla's Model Y is the newest model to merge into traffic around the globe. First unveiled in March of 2019, the Model Y is a more streamlined and less expensive version of the Model X SUV. While production began in California in January of this year, Model Ys have only begun to start arriving in customers driveways since March. Tesla dropped the price of the Model Y by $3,000 this past July, due to increased efficiencies of its in-house-batteries and production assembly. The Model Y is currently being built in Tesla factories in Fremont, CA and Shanghai, but will soon see additional assembly lines in Berlin and Austin, TX.

According to Electrek, an owner of a Model Y Long Range installed the software update in their vehicle which resulted in an increased range of the EV to 320-325 miles. Just last week, Tesla's website listed the EPA estimated range for the same model to be 316 miles. Owners of the Model Y can now expect to see a range increase of four to nine miles after updating. According to a Tesla note accompanying the latest update, the "increased efficiencies" refer to the functionality of both the powertrain and the climate control systems. Tesla followed up by saying these efficiencies do not relate to any increased acceleration or performance of climate control systems.

Tesla's latest software update appears to be nothing but beneficial to EV owners hoping to travel as far as possible on a single charge. With that said, today's news is just one of several headlines surrounding the electric vehicle manufacturer and its constantly shifting business. Just this month, Tesla has slashed prices on its Model S, removed its seven-day return policy from its site, updated its warranties for used Teslas, and announced beta testing of full self-driving capabilities. While the company continuing to expand as the most valuable automaker in the world, it appears to be perpetually pivoting to both give its customers the most powerful and efficient EVs in the world, but without endangering itself financially.

It's important to note that this is not the first time Tesla has accomplished this sort of range upgrade. Last year, it added fifteen miles of additional range to its Model 3 vehicles through a similar over-the-air software update. These updates demonstrate that Tesla is not only making better quality electric vehicles at a more affordable price, but is also working to ever increase the potential of its current fleet, particularly the newer models like the Model 3 and Model Y. Last week, Elon Musk announced a seven-seat option coming to the Model Y this December. With an increased mile range and the ability to soon seat seven, the Model Y is slowly emerging as a major tentpole vehicle for Tesla, second only to the Model 3 which has become the most purchased EV of all time.
