It's been a busy week for politics, but will there be a new episode of NBC comedy series Saturday Night Live to put a humorous spin on the news? SNL season 46 introduced Jim Carrey as the now president-elect Joe Biden alongside Maya Rudolph as his running mate, Kamala Harris, premiering in time to lampoon the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election.
Saturday Night Live has had its work cut out to keep up with real-world politics, which are often even wilder than a comedy sketch. The last new episode aired on November 7th, hosted by Dave Chappelle, with the writers and cast given a very tight turnaround time to respond to the election being declared in favor of Biden just hours earlier. Since then, President Donald Trump has refused to accept the election results or concede to Biden, instead launching a seemingly hopeless legal campaign to try and change the balance of votes in battleground states.
It's typical for Saturday Night Live to take regular breaks throughout each season, and the current break is set to continue, as there is no new episode of Saturday Night Live on NBC tonight. Instead there will be two rerun episodes: one from 2013 with Kerry Washington as the host and Eminem as the musical guest at 10pm ET/9pm CT; and the October 10, 2020 episode hosted by Bill Burr with musical guest Jack White in the show's usual time slot of 11:30pm ET/10:30pm CT.
Saturday Night Live typically doesn't air more than three episodes in a row without taking a break, but an exception was made with the first six episodes of season 46, in order to capitalize on the heated run-up to the election. The break is expected to continue next week, since the SNL cast and crew usually take the Thanksgiving weekend off. The next new episode of Saturday Night Live will likely arrive on Saturday, December 5th.
In the wake of the election results being declared, Donald Trump actor Alec Baldwin commented, "I don’t believe I’ve ever been this overjoyed to lose a job before!" His off-screen counterpart, however, is not so happy about the election's outcome. The state of U.S. politics is currently full of strangeness and spectacle, and that's unlikely to change before Saturday Night Live returns with the next new episode.
