Luke Skywalker Fought Boba Fett Before Empire Strikes Back

Boba Fett and Luke Skywalker fought before encountering one another in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. In the Star Wars (2015) comic series, it's revealed Fett successfully tracked Luke Skywalker on his home planet of Tatooine, and the two engaged in a deadly battle - which occurred before Fett ultimately succumbed (or so we thought) to the Sarlaac Pit.

In The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader assigns a group of bounty hunters, including Fett, to track down the crew who destroyed the Death Star. Fett successfully captured Han Solo (who was later frozen in carbonite) and brings him to Vader. In Return of the Jedi, Fett tries to capture Luke on Tattooine, however, Solo accidentally sets Fett's jetpack off which leads to his apparent death as he ends up in the belly of the Sarlacc. While fans now know Fett survived the Sarlacc Pit, the fight that he seemingly died in wasn't the first time he ran into Luke.

In the Star Wars (2015) comic series by Jason Aaron, John Cassaday, Laura Martin, Chris Eliopoulos, and Heather Antos, Luke Skywalker is seeking answers at Ben Kenobi's house on Tatooine. Meanwhile, Fett interrogates a number of locals in Mos Eisley to gain information on the mysterious Jedi. When searching through Kenobi's abandoned home with Artoo, Fett throws a flash grenade and knocks him to the ground. Fett hits Luke on the head and tells "Skywalker" to sit down. Despite being blinded by the flash, Luke pulls out his lightsaber, and the two duke it out.

Luke and Boba Fett engage in a back-and-forth battle, but once Luke deflects a blaster shot, the assassin lunges at Luke as he jetpacks through the air. When the two hit the ground, Fett comes within inches of killing Luke by pushing his own lightsaber towards him. However, he uses the Force to knock him out with a box that as it turns out, as Kenobi's journals inside. Luke would escape and leave Fett defeated.

In the comic, Aaron and Cassady made it canon that Luke and Boba Fett met before their supposed first meeting. It's a deadly affair and nearly ends in Luke's death. But why wasn't it mentioned in Return of the Empire? Well, Fett isn't exactly the most talkative character in the Star Wars universe, and he didn't complete his job, why would he bring it up to Vader? Considering how this story takes place soon before Boba Fett's 'death' in Return of the Empire, it fits in canonically and adds an interesting new wrinkle to his and Luke Skywalker's story, even if it's not mentioned in the iconic film. Who knows? Maybe, Fett will bring up the meeting on Tatooine in an upcoming episode of The Mandalorian.
