New Star Wars TV Show Explores Fresh Timeline & Locations, Teases Writer

Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland teases when her Star Wars Disney+ series takes place. Following the launch of The Mandalorian's first season last year, Lucasfilm began to increase their plans for Disney+ Star Wars shows. For some time, the only shows confirmed were those starring Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). There have been constant rumors about other projects that could be in the works, though, including a possible Boba Fett spinoff from The Mandalorian.

Although most of the rumored Star Wars Disney+ shows remain just that, Lucasfilm did confirm the addition of one more in early 2020. It was previously reported that Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland was developing a female-centric Star Wars show for the streaming service. Lucasfilm confirmed Headland's addition to the galaxy far, far away a few months later, but the announcement did not come with any official details about the story or setting.

In some of her first public comments about the show, Headland teased when the mysterious Star Wars series is set in a new interview. She spoke to Fantastic Frankey about the upcoming series, which she will write, produce, and showrun, and confirmed that it will take place at a point in time that hasn't been thoroughly explored.

I would say it's in a pocket of the universe and a pocket of the timeline that we don't know much about. That's what I can say.

When the reports of Headland's Star Wars series first surfaced, it was stated that it was set "in a different part of the Star Wars timeline than other projects." Headland's new comments effectively confirm that this report is accurate, even though she stopped short of revealing when in the timeline it does take place. Since there is no timetable for this project, it is impossible to know when more information on it will surface or when the setting will be confirmed.

The decision by Headland and Lucasfilm to place the upcoming Star Wars series in a pocket of the timeline that hasn't been overly explored is the smart move. So far, all of the Disney+ shows are set around the original trilogy of films, but there are thousands of years worth of stories to tell. Since the show seemingly won't take place at the same time as any of the movies, it could be set before the prequels, between the prequels and the original trilogy, or between the original trilogy and the sequel trilogy. If the show is really going to explore a part of the timeline that we still don't know much about, a story set before the prequels could be the best place for it. And with the High Republic storylines starting in 2021 across books and comics, Headland's show could serve as a bridge between a story set hundreds of years in the past and everything else that has already been made.
