Director Aneesh Chaganty's psychological thriller, Run released on Hulu's streaming platform in November 2020 after a lengthy delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but will it get a sequel? Here's everything we know about the release date, renewal information, cast, and story of Run 2.
Run stars American Horror Story alum Sarah Paulson as Diane Sherman, a mother who has dedicated her life to caring for her ill daughter, Chloe (Kiera Allen). While it seems like Diane is a hardworking, attentive, compassionate mother, Chloe's desires to go to college and establish some independence for herself are not only poorly received by her mother, but lead the precocious teenager to think her mother might not have the best intentions in regard to her care. Chloe starts to question everything her mother does, especially after she starts taking strange, new pills that are initially marked with her mother's name. A series of twists and turns leads Run, a well-crafted thriller, to its breakneck conclusion. Chaganty proved his capabilities with another thriller in 2018, the critically acclaimed Searching, which was his directorial debut.
Even though the state of film and TV production is limited at this time due to increased precautions and other measures being taken to stay safe during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Run has a lot working in its favor that lead to the possibility for a sequel.
As of this writing, there's no news of Run 2 being in the works from either Chaganty or Lionsgate. Run was originally scheduled for a theatrical release to coincide with Mother's Day weekend—May 8, 2020—but was delayed indefinitely due to theater closures. However, the movie was picked up by Hulu, and launched on its streaming platform in November 2020, six months later. It's possible that Run will be a success for Hulu, which could mean Lionsgate and Hulu could work together to broker an exclusive detail for the sequel to run on Hulu as well, rather than go to theaters. However, the lack of a traditional box office might also hurt the chances of a sequel.
Run was first announced in June 2018, so there was approximately two years between announcement and release. The movie went into production in late 2018 and wrapped soon after. Originally intended to be a January 2020 release, the delay to May added more time than was necessary between wrapping filming and post-production and release, but it's likely a sequel would stick to the same two-year schedule. If Run 2 is green-lit sometime in 2020, expect to see the sequel release sometime in 2022. If not, it's possible the movie wouldn't release until sometime in 2023.

Given the open-ended nature of Run's ending, there are a few routes a sequel could take. However, it's also possible Chaganty could decide the story was appropriately told, and not extend it beyond what's already been released. Since Paulson's character is still alive at the end of the movie, and still maintaining some semblance of a relationship—even a one-sided one—with Chloe (albeit in a hospital), she could always find a way to escape. Though Diane seems to be in poor health, and is clearly not mentally stable, she's not a completely neutralized threat. There's also the possibility that Run 2 could focus on Chloe, who surely has her own aftermath to contend with even years after the initial events of the movie. While she's had some time to heal, but it's always possible that Diane's abuse could have a long-lasting, negative impact on her, and could address how the cycle of abuse can continue and is often ugly.
