WandaVision’s Monica Rambeau Actor’s Goals With The Adult Character

Teyonah Parris, who will play the adult Monica Rambeau in WandaVision, reveals her goals in taking on the character. Set to debut on Disney+ later this year, WandaVision is the first Marvel show to release as part of the MCU's Phase 4. Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the series will center around Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) as they settle into a blissful suburban life together. However, things take a weird turn when the couple realizes everything is not as it seems. The two appear to navigate multiple realities, including a 50's sitcom-style world. Along with Wanda and Vision, the show will also see the return of Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) and Jimmy Woo (Randall Park), while introducing Katherine Hahn in a mysterious, possibly villainous role.

Another familiar character is Monica Rambeau, who briefly appeared in the trailer. Monica, last seen as a young girl in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's 2019 film Captain Marvel, returns in WandaVision as an adult (which makes sense considering Captain Marvel took place in the 90s). Recent set photos also confirmed Monica is working for Nick Fury's intergalactic organization SWORD. Fans have speculated that the series will see Monica take on her superhero identity, Spectrum. While Monica's involvement in WandaVision has been kept mostly under wraps, Parris is opening up about what it's like to play the adult Monica.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Parris discusses taking on Monica's role, and what she hopes it will mean to other Black women. "I feel so special and honored to be able to walk in her shoes and bring her story to life," said Parris. "I hope that me playing this character (a) gives a group of people who are underrepresented a chance to see themselves, and (b) seeing my face, and my Black body helps them engage with Black women and our humanity."

Monica has had a lengthy history in the comics, assuming a variety of superhero identities. She broke barriers as the first Black female Avenger, at one point becoming the leader of the Avengers. She has also gone by other names, including Photon, Pulsar, and Spectrum, and was even called Captain Marvel at one point. She gained her powers from extradimensional energy, which gave her the ability to transform and control energy, among other powers. It's unclear how her story will be depicted in WandaVision, though many believe she may have gotten her powers from entering Wanda's reality based on the trailer.

At this point, much of WandaVision remains a mystery, which is intended to keep fans eager for the series to debut. There are many questions regarding Monica's role in the series, between her involvement in SWORD and if she will take on her Spectrum identity. While Parris didn't reveal much about how adult Monica will tie into the story, it's clear that the role is important to her and that fans can expect her to add a lot of depth to the part.
