Boba Fett actor says he's uncertain whether he will be back for The Mandalorian season 3. Beginning with the appearance of a mysterious caped figure at the end of season 1 episode “The Gunslinger,” speculation swirled among fans about famed bounty hunter Boba Fett making his way to Disney+’s smash hit show set in the Star Wars universe.
Fans of course had been expecting a full-on Boba Fett movie or TV show after Disney began announcing its plans for expanding Star Wars beyond the sequel trilogy, but instead of a series centered on that mysterious character, Disney+ delivered something arguably bigger and more intriguing with The Mandalorian (which of course preserved many design elements of Boba Fett in its lead character Din Djarin). But in season 2, fans got to have their cake and eat it too, as the caped man teased in “The Gunslinger” was revealed at last to be Boba Fett himself (not a huge surprise as it was reported between seasons that Temuera Morrison would be playing the character on the show, after portraying Boba’s father Jango Fett in the prequels).
Now that Boba Fett has finally arrived on The Mandalorian, the question is how big a role the character will play in the story going forward, and whether he will be back for season 3. Fett actor Morrison for his part has no answers about whether the character will figure into plans for a third season of The Mandalorian (which has already been announced by Disney+). Speaking to the New York Times, Morrison said:
“I’m just going to have to wait and see. I think a lot of it depends on how things go with this season, but I don’t really know. I wanted to bring everything I had to that [episode] and give them a glimmer of what I can offer. There’s room for this to go someplace. I hope I’m going to be included.”
Having been briefly teased early in the season after Din Djarin acquired his armor from Cobb Vanth on Tatooine, Boba Fett made his proper entrance into the action in last week’s episode “The Tragedy,” as the bounty hunter arrived on the planet Tython in his iconic Slave 1 ship with a rebuilt Fennec Shand in tow. Of course, Boba cared nothing about the on-going drama with Baby Yoda aka Grogu, he just wanted his armor back from Mando. The ensuing tense stand-off came to an abrupt end however when stormtroopers arrived on Tython, forcing Mando, Boba and Fennec to join forces and fight for their lives. The episode ended with a shocking twist as Moff Gideon unleashed his Dark Troopers to snatch up Baby Yoda and take him away to be imprisoned.
In true mercenary fashion, there didn’t seem anything particularly altruistic about Boba Fett teaming up with Mando to fight Moff Gideon and the stormtroopers, but rather it seemed he was simply allying himself with whoever benefited him at the moment. Indeed, for a second it seemed Boba was ready to take out Baby Yoda to destroy the Dark Troopers, until Mando called him off. It remains to be seen what role Boba Fett may play as Mando gets a team together to go get Baby Yoda back from Moff Gideon, but it seems fair to assume that Djarin shouldn’t entirely trust the bounty hunter who once turned Han Solo over to the Empire. Then again, maybe Boba Fett is actually ready to put aside his mercenary ways and, like Solo before him, find a righteous cause to fight for.
Either way it seems very much up in the air whether Boba Fett’s story will continue in The Mandalorian season 3. There have of course been rumors of the character getting his own spinoff show on Disney+, but nothing has been confirmed in that direction, and in fact there’s a good argument to be made that Boba Fett should remain a supporting character rather than a lead.
